Hey /v/, I'm developing an online trading card game called Forgotten Lore. The big thing in the game is that every single card is a unique Steam Inventory item that is both tradable and marketable with no strings attached (except for the starter deck).

Posting a batch of keys for people to snatch up to start off. Post steam profile url if you want me to just drop the game in your account (you won't get a notification, it will just show up in your library). Anyways.

The game is kind of a mix between video game pokemon and hearthstone, gameplay wise. You build your tome (deck) out of pages (cards). You can put the pages into different types of tomes for different gameplay styles.

For example, one is Leech. It's a pretty basic tome that sucks 1 HP each turn, but gives you 2 Souls (mana) in exchange. Another is Mill, which does not give or take anything each turn. Instead, you sacrifice cards in your hand to get Souls whenever you please.

There are a bunch of different skills and status effects, like poison, freeze, etc. You attack the other player's tome until it's HP is 0 to win.

The game is going to be $10 during Early Access (starting in late May, next month). It'll probably be in Early Access for like 6-8 months. When it fully releases it'll be a free to play game, where you can purchase card packs (similar to a real TCC, but you get a starter pack for free).

When the game fully releases, anything players obtain during the Early Access (a period where getting card drops is much easier, since the game is pay to play at the moment) will be carried over automatically.

Anyways, just letting you know the UI looks pretty meh. You might want to redo it or hire someone who can make it look good. Most importantly, though, is that I noticed you really love having status effects pop up throughout the gameplay video. As someone who's played several online TCG alone with some actual paper ones, having these notifications can be really annoying. Experienced players would like to get the game going pretty quickly without needing someone to hand-hold them and remind them every 2 seconds what they already know happens with card interactions. I highly recommend you disable it in ranked play (if there's going to be one) or allow players to disable it in Options. But don't do it like Magic Duels: if one person in the match has the animations enabled, the other person is forced to wait for that guy to finish watching it, basically defeated the point of disabling it in the first place.

Just my 2 cents on what I've seen so far.

Ok, immediately I see an issue in terms of design. I like that you have a little pop-out thing that displays the card's abilities, but it seems silly to have this big nice-looking card with lore on it, and then the only actual relevant information is off to the side.

All of the other information is at the corners of the cards, so you've got most of the card being wasted. You're rarely going to look at the card during play unless you want to read the lore a bit. The obvious solution is to have a toggle so you can cycle the text on the card between Lore and Abilities for all cards.

This is planned. You're seeing pre-early access stuff, so the graphics are lacking in many places.

Yeah, I feel ya. The card template is still pretty placeholder. Eventually the skills will be easily understood icons on the card itself, with the information on what they do fading in after. Spells and Soul cards will have entirely different templates, to make it more obvious what they do. And Yeah, stat placement needs work, I agree.

What, you never played D&D? Defense is the threshold you have to beat to do damage, I assume. HP is the health.

So if your attack does 5 damage, the target has 2 defense, and 10 HP, you'll only do 3 damage, leaving your opponent with 7HP.

Seems pretty intuitive, OP, gotta commend you for that. The animations really help in letting me figure out what the fuck is going on. Greying your card out when it's used up and having it go "SWOOSH" in is pretty effective. I dunno if that's common, since i never played other TCGs, but yeah I like it so far.

A few bits of feedback though, it's hard to read the cards properly when they're small, at least on my screen, and them getting bigger every time you roll over is annoying. I'd prefer to be able to right click to make a card bigger, rather than have it fill the entire screen automatically.

Cards have a set defense stat. So if a card with 5 attack attacks a card with 3 defense, the total damage done is only 2. However if a card with 4 attack attacks a card with 6 defense, the damage will always still be at least 1. Make sense? Certain cards can affect these stats in-game.

Figured as much, but considering this is a card game I thought it'd be over-complicating things. You want to make the card as easily understandable and readable, not overload it with a bunch of numbers and concepts. Still, I guess if OP figures out a good way to implement defense mechanics then it can work. I just worry it's creating a very steep learning curve for new players. Ok, some more feedback, OP. When trying to target their Life Points directly, the other card lights up, but the book doesn't. I didn't realise it was a legitimate move I could make until the bot attacked my points.

So I tried attacking hers and assumed I couldn't because the book wasn't lighting up with the little green outline. But when I dragged over her bigass spell, Leech I think it is, there was a green outline around that, and my card attacked her card, lowering her HP.

Not sure what the hell was supposed to have happened, but yeah it was weird.

Also, might be nice to have some calculations along the side or something that tell you how much damage you'll do and whatnot.

Yeah, the main menu is absolute garbage right now. We've tried a few different things but are still on the drawing board with it. Your description is pretty spot on. The only addition I can make to it is that cards always do at least 1 damage, no matter how much defense is present (which will probably be confusing at first for new players)

Yeah, I've noticed this is a problem, especially on lower resolutions. Really, the only parts I want visible when they are small are the portrait art, name, and maybe Soul cost for summoning the card. The rest is faff that you should see when expanding over it.

It's so early in development that this could possibly happen. Right before this thread started I was working on the Fusion system, eg sacrificing skeleton minions to summon a skeleton king, etc. Lots of higher level stuff like that is still on the drawing board and may very well happen, especially if people are rooting for it.

I might accept the game though honestly it might just end up permanently in my backlog. If the game is planning to be free at a later date anyway and I am not planning on playing it then there is very little reason for me to get it now.

The only reason I am posting is because sometimes games will have beta-only rewards, holidays stuff and other such "rares" that are extremely hard if not outright unobtainable at a later date. I might accept the game simply to just grab such possible cards if there are any when they are available and go back to playing something else.

So I'll ask, is anything like that will be going on with the game or are there any kind of daily login reward system in place? Ok, in that case screw it, I'll join. Who knows, maybe I'll be in the mood for a TCG later down the road and this will be sitting there waiting for me. More likely will regret missing out than having an unplay game in my library anyway.
