It was a good game. Truthfully it would have been better without obnoxious memes but still good.
Played it when I got it on PS+
It was really charming and I enjoyed it. The memes were barely noticeable(hurr its on a billboard) and the Metroid shout-out felt a bit forced but otherwise I had fun. Hope they make a sequel after Severed.

Guacamelee was a good game, but it has some hideous flaws.
And I'm not talking about the memes. The bosses are a shitshow and don't incorporate any of the mechanics, the co-op is fucked, the story pacing is shot, and so on.
But the fundemental mechanics and platforming make it a game worth playing for anyone with a taste of Metroidvania.inb4 needs rpg mechanics you igafags.

I refused to play it for the longest time because the sheer amount of memes and references made me think it was just a shoddy game made for the internet crowd.
When I finally decided to play it I enjoyed it quite a bit. That stuff is still really obnoxious but the mechanics are tight and the game is rather well designed.
I think there's just something bland looking about the dungeons, they all just look like generic "rooms" and the few distinguishing features are really weak.
Also the Mexican theme was a bit shallow. It wasn't really used in an interesting way, it was just "here's some Mexican stuff". It felt like they set the game in Mexico simply because of the Internet's obsession with stuff like luchadores or chimichanga or the chupacabra and stuff like that.
