What the FUCK were they thinking not having an extra mode where you can play as any of the characters in missions? No need for a story mode skin swap, I'm just talking letting you select a character and do one of the already generic missions in the already generic locations?
They already had the combat capable models for Genesis and Sephiroth, and character models for Angeal and Cloud could just be a Zack swap so what's the excuse? This game would have been received a lot better if it had just that little bit more meat to it. I had nothing against playing Zack in the story, but after playing the story my mind starts to wander

I never really partnered up with Aeries I always kept it my original team of Tifa and Barret. Tifa was my healer. Plus once Valentine came on bored Aeries never existed. Except for the ancient temple but even then.
I liked that they showed that Sephiroth wasn't such a bad guy and was capable of having good relationships with people. Genesis himself was shit though.

I'll tell you this, personally I didn't mind the addition of Angeal and Genesis since Zack needed a legitimate final boss for himself and a mentor figure, but both had to be relatively low profile enough not to fuck with world building from FF7 and they really didn't. Angeal and Genesis were both failed clones and Angeal dies like a bitch halfway through the game so happy go lucky retard Zack can become the more experienced hero figure Zack.
Genesis was just a literally who to give him a final boss and that's fine.

Too bad the Sephiroth fight is too easy in the Hojo superboss version on Hard mode. They really should've made him more aggressive, that alone would make the fight better. He has too much "cooldown" before attacks.

Not trying to justify it, but if you're looking for an explanation of sorts I think Genesis serves as the catalyst because once he found out he was a failed variation of Sephiroth he needed to get the last leg up by letting Sephiroth know what they were as a whole.
Because of the fact he interacted with Sephiroth at all and the nature of his character feeling inadequate he had to do something to antagonize him in the end sort of like how the training scene implies he'll look for a fight even when he's clearly on the losing side. The solution would have been to keep Genesis' character away from Sephiroth with the two having no interaction, that way even if he felt the need to get back at Sephiroth he couldn't really say anything to him since Sephiroth would just see him as a traitor and kill his ass on sight.
But they needed the whole Angeal, Genesis, Sephiroth thing for whatever reason. I still think they could have separated Angeal's relation with the two. Zack knows Cloud but doesn't introduce him to Angeal, Kunsel or Aerith.
In short I agree with you, there was too much effort to tie things together that didn't need to be, but I can see how it happened at some point in the story where they realized some people couldn't know something and not tell others as it would seem curiously convenient. Then again Zack and Cloud learned a bunch of shady shit no one seems to hear about until years later so again they probably should have dropped trying to explain away who knew what and just shrugged it off since FFVII's already happened as it's happened.
