The N64 was released and it was huge to be able to play games in 3d on a console. OoT truly felt like an adventure, majoras mask, 007, perfect dark, banjo kazooie, diddy kong racing, mario 64 etc.
Blizzard was still good and they released starcraft and diablo 2 in those years.

We have a challenge: in the next Tomb Raider, Lara gets almost raped, then gets the absolute shit kicked out of her! Imagine the drama of a vulnerable - very, very vulnerable - Lara Croft, holding back tears and telling herself she can do this! It needs some poking and prodding, no pun intended, but we guarantee her longtime fans will be shocked, stunned, and flabbergasted at the attempt to make Lara's character more meaningful.
