Dev's concession was that it was removed because of the tone of the game. Which is fine because every other HM or Rune Factory didn't let you kill your livestock either because they all championed the hippie attitude of "THESE ANIMALS ARE YOUR FRIENDS TREAT THEM LIKE SUCH"
Rune Factory, in fact, was the game series that was the MOST heavy handed with this message. Going as far as to explain that even the monsters you killed weren't dead, you just "banished" them.

Rune Factory feels different from Stardew Valley, RF has better combat, but you can really ignore the farming element, crafting, forging and shit and selling the stuff you made can already make you a lot of money, while in SV most of your money will come from farming related stuff. I like how in SV your go to the mines, and then the loot you get there eventually helps you build the farm up, you get better sprinklers which will help you get shit done faster. This synergy is lacking in RF games, at times it feels like 2 different games together.
Also for better or worse, the energy management in SV is a big part of the game, while RF allows you to recover your energy in many different ways, this makes SV a quite tense game at times, you gotta maximize you efficiency at all times and you can easily miss quests and shit if you get carried away with the things you do.
The Stardew dev guy should definitely take hints from RF games when it comes to characters, they often talk about things they like and sometimes you can figure what they dislike by checking stuff in their store and such, while SV leaves it mostly to trial and error gifts.

Beat it twice(Year 3, Spring 1), once with everyone being my friend at the end and completing the community center, another as a Joja soldier growing potatoes to fuel the corporate machine. Both times were fun, but unless some massive overhaul comes out I'm pretty much done with it. I wish the game was 3 years long with different events happening every year that finish off on a concrete ending at year 4, but ehhh. It's fine. I'm not a huge fan of the post-grading game. Its fun. For $15 you can't go wrong. Its not perfect and if you don't like the genre, it won't appeal to you. But its very solid, has its monies worth of content and if you ARE a fan of the genre, it'll surely keep you interested. There are promises of future updates and modders working hard to add new content, so consider it a relatively cheap investment that'll pay off.
I'd say RF4 is more fun for the fun factor, though. Also, that's my favorite portrait mod.

It is basically a very close to HM clone, even down to how you pick hay from the fodder and put on the place every day for your cows and chicken, use the sickle on grass to get the hay, even though you don't need to plant the grass like HM did.
The combat is not as good as RF's (I only played RF3 and not 4). I find the people of stardew valley kinda cliche as fuck, you have a girl that plays games, and dyed her hair purple, you have a dumb bimbo, and similar stock personalities. RF3 was a lot of quirkiness to it, but I found the people of it way better.
But stardew valley just hits the addiction element of harvest moon well I suppose
