That being said, BlazBlue is the only genuinely good story I can think of in a fighting game, and even then only about half the cast is actually relevant to the story.

Anon, remember Soul Calibur didn't have a proper story mode and offline modes (to be fair, due to time constraints) and guess what? It tanked. Arguably best fighting mechanics in the series, but lack of offlines modes like WM or CotS probably caused it to tank. I'm well aware it was due to time constraints, but my point is lore and story can be pretty important in fighting games these days.
That F2P offline spinoff didn't exactly do the series any favors but that's another story.
