Well the way God of War III explains it is that opening Pandora's Box in the first game unleashes fear and all that other shit which corrupts the gods and makes them fearful of Kratos' growing power. As much as I like GoW's portrayal of Greek mythology, this was always one of the things that bugged me because Pandora's Box is basically the Greek equivalent of the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. I actually liked that scene, it was Kratos' first shown story interaction aside from killing monsters and jumping off of the cliff at the start of the game. Even then, his ultimate goal during that section of the game was trying to save the women trapped in the brig. It showed that he was already detached but still retained some of his humanity.
