Are you serious? I don't even think sonic R was even intended to be a racing game at first. It always seemed like a failed platformer that was going to have racing as an optional versus mode like sonic 2 and 3.
I can not see how anyone could have possibly thought that the ruins stage and the chemical plant stage could possibly make for a good racetrack.

I don't think I'd enjoy anything else more than an on-foot racer coming from the sonic team.
I fucking loved multiplayer racing in the games they were in, I'll admit I didn't like Sonic R though. That game wasn't anywhere near polished enough for our taste.
It'd be pretty great if they gave us a title with diverse characters, nice music, cool stages and on-foot racing.
