And it actually explained basic game mechanics unlike Dark Souls with kindling, Estus upgrades, and weapon upgrades. It also didn't cater to "le so hardcore xDD" memers and was never meant to be arbitrarily difficult, but was just meant to be punishing so victories felt more fulfilling and rewarding.

if you like the mechanics and invasion system that much you must think that dark souls 2 is the best in the series. The combat is comparitivley stiff to the rest of the series and the level, armor, and weapon designs are subpar for the series. Some people have nostalgia goggles that cover up the improvements of the series. Thats why DS2 is hated when its not a terrible game.

I just got around to playing Demon's Souls after having played DaS1,2, and currently playing 3.
Gotta say, I almost like it better than 1. It's got a very 6th gen sense of atmosphere. It literally feels like a King's Field game, more than any of the following games do. (though DaS2 comes close, if only for it's references)
