The reason why betraying is sometimes stronger than allying is because the goal isn't to get a high score, but to get to 9 first. If you're not at 9 and someone else is, you can potentially get stuck forever.
Of course if everybody trusts each other then it's easy, because you can trust that others don't escape before the rest has attained 9. But just because there's one person (Dio) willing to betray to open the door first, it forces other people to also choose betray so Dio isn't the only one to leave.
The biggest flaw is that in the game you don't play the prisoner's dilemma, but sequential prisoner's dilemma. And there is a whole lot more theory on playing the prisoner's dilemma sequentially, including which strategies give the highest chance of winning.

I thought all the characters had good dialog outside of Quark, who was MIA for the majority of the game. It's a little disappointing there's only one puzzle room were you got paired up with Dio, while Clover had 4+ puzzle rooms, but I thought he still had a shitton of good dialog throughout the rest of the game.
Sigma and Phi had the best bantz in the game by far though.
