Crusader Kings I is dirt cheap on gog right now. Would that be a decent entry point for a Paradox novice like me?

I don't know about 1, but if you're looking at CKII just pirate it. Honest. Doesn't matter how cheap the game is, there's 200 dollarydoos worth of DLC.

>>
>>334499467
I'd say so. Japan isn't an incredibly hard start, but it's not the easiest nation. America, for example, is fucking baby-mode. Now, if you want a bigger challenge, go China. Win every war, westernize, don't die by rebels, and maybe expand. You'll go to #1 pretty easily, but you'll almost always be on the edge of collapse.
>>
>>334500284
God damn China, those rebels tore me a new one then Britain decided to come along

why are the ottomans so easy to play in EU3 and EU4? I always end up dismantling the HRE or expanding all the way to India virtually unopposed. Even end game and europe is ahead of me by technology I would already be leagues ahead in manpower where I can throw thousands and thousands of men at them to win a war.

Seriously they need a big nerf

Yes,Russians were sending me like 5000 pops per day for a couple of years.
>>
>>334501884
Because Kebab expanded mightily and was the boss for the first half of both games. They need to be strong enough to pose something like their historical threat. Problem is that Paradox doesn't give unique buffs for specific AI nations and that allows players to over-perform with the same buffs.
>>
>>334502284
iirc aussies count as 'new world' for immigration bonuses.
>>
>>334502284
>>334502458
So do you basically just need to become a democracy and focus on plurality? Does the attract immigrants national focus actually do anything?
>>
>>334502302
>Problem is that Paradox doesn't give unique buffs for specific AI nations
>what is lucky nations
>>
>>334502627
Lucky nations is flat for all lucky nations. I'm suggesting something more tailor-made so Otto-derps get more expansionist/militarist leaders and have some other buffs.
>>
>>334502602
>Does the attract immigrants national focus actually do anything?
Far as I know, it directs immigration rather than actually increasing your share of them. So, not really unless you want to help a state grow and get more factory workers.
>>
>>334502302
The issue is that it's just the ottomans, nations like Morocco and Algeria as well as the Mamlukes are a push over, same with Persia when the AI manages to finally create it. If they wanted to pose a historical threat then those nations should all be on par with the ottomans as well as East Europe, I.E Poland, and even Austria to the west and Venice since historically they did manage to halt the Ottoman expansion westward.

Hell, within the first 30 years of the game I'm already expanding into Austrian lands unopposed as the Ottomans if I entirely avoid the east.

>>334502602
Democracy+Liberty gives the biggest bonus and having a party in power with full citizenship also helps integrating pops, there might also be some events that increase immigration like this one.
And the immigration national focus only influences internal migration.

>>334500837
>>334501693
I meant distant worlds. Is it good?
>>
>>334502869
So, Iberian power relative to the Barbaries is definitely out of balance, that much is true. Personally, I blame attrition. It's a joke. The limitation here is the AI, but the point remains that attrition needs more teeth in EU.

As for the Turks and their expansion, the problem is how to handle their growth phase in a responsible way. Unfortunately, besides the Janissary chain, there's no Ottoman buff that later turns into a malus. There are also few DHEs that help facilitate Ottoman expansion, as well as reflect historical collapse in Hungary and the Mamluk Sultanate. Instead, Hungary and Egypt have to be weak so the Ottoderps can win.

A more ideal circumstance would be events that see Hungary lose development under Ottoman and Austrian rule, see Hungary racked by revolts and internal problems, and an event to create the Principality of Transylvania as an Ottoman vassal. Same goes for Egypt. The Ottoman-Mamluk conflict should end with Syria becoming Ottoman and Egypt being a vassal.

Does HM's government count as a democracy? Or is there any way to get to a democracy from HM's government?
>>
>>334504518
I've had democracy come from HM's government when I had full political reforms. I think you need full voting rights and a full upper house reforms at the very least.
>>
>>334504703
This, having full political reforms will give you the maximum immigrant attraction bonus.

>>
>>334507245
So, it's their normal real-time strategy thing.

The game is described as 4X in the beginning, with more of a grand-strat feel after the various powers have started establishing themselves.

>>
>>334504501
they should take a hit to discipline and military tradition to reflect the massive lost of experienced troops during the Great Turkish wars
maybe some economic technology and trade penalties to reflect the lack of modernization by the second half of the game
>>
>>334508356
Honestly, I think the best thing to do would be to scrap westernisation, which has never worked and wasn't really a thing in the game's timeline besides Russia and maybe-sorta-Poland right before the partition, and just equalize tech growth. If tech growth were equalized, adjusting military units so that the right parts of the world start to become militarily irrelevant at the right times would be far simpler. Now, this would require a naval unit chain on a per tech-group basis, but I'd say the result would be worth it.

>tfw so much colonial power that I deliberately hold back lest Vicky get even easier

>>
>>334504501

The historic success of Ottomans happened because of a retarded string of luck in battles over two hundred years. Its pretty had to model that.
>>
>>334497139
I'm playing Civ V with my little brother, does that count?
>>
>>334509980
I took a look at the ottoman decline and it mentions that they had string of great leaders followed by a string ones that sucked who allowed provincial elites to grab power from the central government while the royal harem took a lot of power in the central government and allowed corruption to flourish.
Also what exactly did they get lucky with?

So, Otto-derps had a few lucky moments, but almost all of them happened before EUIV starts.

1)Bulgars wreck Byzzies
2)Serbs wreck Bulgars
3)Turks massacre Serbs @ Kosovo giving them a solid European holdings that have been totally pacified
4)Genoans and Venetians save Kebab armies from Tamerlane
5)Jagiellon king of Poland-Hungary-Croatia totally fucks up Varna {EUIV starts now}
6)Hungary totally implodes and Turks step in

After that, their expansion in Europe proper was pretty limited. They mostly took over Tatar lands in Southern Ukraine and Circassia.

Divergences of Darkness

It's an alternate history mod that uses Victoria's Popular Demand Mod. In this world the 100 Years War ended with France and England unifying and Burgundy becoming a major player. Bohemia is now the leading state of the Holy Roman Empire and Poland Lithuania is still around. A lot of other nations also became great powers and secondary powers that aren't in real history in the 1830's.

It's pretty damn fun and very unique. Probably the best alt history mod for a paradox game other than Kaiserreich
>>
I wish I had the time to get into these paradox games.
>>
>tfw Kaiserreich 2 might be happening

shame that HOI4's map looks like ass though
>>
>>334511698

>6)Hungary totally implodes and Turks step in

The turks march in, win a battle because the nobles refused to chip in, and they loiter around for a while thinking they only beaten a vanguard before plundering and retreating. Then the austrians invade and the ottomans march into an undefended capital.
