8 player Smash was Planned for brawl, but wasn't added due to the lack of controller options, which is why That Rotation Mode was added instead for 5+ players. 8 Player Smash works on Gamecube with Ice Climbers Via Ditto Hacking. Sakurai even said the Ice Climbers were working just fine on the Wii U, but the 3DS was causing problems.

I'm in the Navy and live on a ship. So I don't get the luxury of owning consoles. My 3ds and Vita are pretty much the only things I have to pass time, and they've got a massive library just on ports alone.

Pretty much every fighting game has moves that have bigger or smaller hitboxes than the actual animation indicates. (see: Marth's grab vs Yoshi's grab in Melee, Metaknight's moves in Smash 4, etc.) The only one that really doesn't is Skullgirls because they went into extreme detail with their hitboxes so that they actually layered over the animations
It's a balance thing. Sometimes following the animation makes something too good so the hitbox is shorter and things that should collide don't. Other times the animation would never be practical so they just increase the size of the hitbox so you get weird disjointed stuff like Bayonetta and Snake.
It's a simple fact about any fighting game, and that only now is it bothering you says more about you than the game

Yes, it does since Sakurai just considered Smash 64 a non competitive game that you would just play for fun with 4 players. He didn't balance the game with a competitive scene in mind unlike the dev team Sakurai had to help develop Smash 4.
