>Game start with exposition instead of gameplay
>20 minutes of movie to put the gameplay in context is a problem now
ok wow do you want games to be super mario bros forever or what?

Nice strawman
See: how Shu Takumi revolutionized point and click adventures.

Are you saying Ghost Trick isn't the best game in the last 10 years?
>>334484298
That's what I'm saying, horrible pacing in an interactive medium is often the case.

Now prove that those two groups are the same, as you undoubtedly insinutate.
Any second is a videogame that doesn't have the player in full control is a failure and should be skippable. So are interactive cutscenes that lock you up or have your character walk for 20 minutes while characters have their stupid plot conversations.
Out of maybe several thousand games which I played in my life I remember the story of maybe 8. Vidya has the worst quality of storytelling, and even if it didn't, I paid money for that part where you press buttons and shoot things, so fuck off and let me skip your pathetic attempts at artistry
>>334483898
Metal Wolf Chaos did it and is still a good game
>>334483898
Game devs are too lazy to learn proper worldbuilding, and just assume the same kind of bullshit carries over from other media. It doesn't.
It's like how B^U writes fucking novels and ignores the visual aspect of comics in their entirety, shunning the medium yet clinging to it for some vestigial purpose everyone has forgotten.
Just saying, if you don't know how to make a game function as a game instead of a novel/movie, then write a fucking novel/movie. Game devs are fucking lazy as shit with this, especially the godawful indie ones.

Audio logs you should be able to listen to while playing. Text logs depend upon the game and whether it suits it, but should always be a choice and assuming it's a game game(fps, fighting game etc) and not some sort of point and click etc (not dissing them, just saying they lack gameplay and focus on other areas) it should rip any relevant info out of it and gives you a very minimal tldr, such as: X door combination is 6154.

metroid zero mission as well
i'd argue that gaining items along the way is only slightly better design. i'd give the player a variety of moves that he can finish the game with outright and put the special stuff in as secrets.

I actually like story in videogames, but cutscenes are a lazy way of doing it. Story should mostly be told through in-game elements, like newspapers, character dialogue, e-mails, etc.
>>334493064
>newspapers, character dialogue, e-mails
>text, recited text, text
Fuck dude, video games have graphics now.
>>334493064
I like scripted events going on while you still have control of the character
Double Dragon has the best opening cuscene to date.
>>334487498

>What if
>We started the story in the MIDDLE?
>OR EVEN AT THE END?
>THEN HAD PLAYERS PLAY TO THAT POINT!
>I mean, of course there's not going to be any suspense or any possibility of events not unfolding in a way that leads to that part of the story, but who needs that?
Only game to do it right was Uncharted 2, since they gave nothing away and had you wondering how the hell he got into the situation rather than waiting until it happened.

This tbhfam
>>334491081
At least SotN gave you a code that allowed an exploit that retained your start-gear, which breaks the game in two
>game starts with gameplay accompanied by exposition
Main example I remember was Bayonetta 1 and 2
>>334483898
>Game has no box cover

My half life did not come with a manual or box, it was a corporate freebie I got for bullshit with 90's era computer companies.

Too bad bayo first level after that his filled with way too much cutscenes.
They're fun and all, but you barely tasted the gameplay and want more, so they're not really welcome so soon.
>gameplay can never tell a story
>story must be told in cutscenes always
Excessive cutscenes are bad game design, but balancing story and gameplay is not a zero-sum game.
