When did Mario become boring shit to you? New Super Mario Bros killed it for me
It was never especially exciting for me, I only played it when my brother begged me to get past some worlds for him.
I tried playing some of the newer games but as I said before, it never quite worked for me.
When I compared the difficulty of the past 2D titles to the new ones.
I still can't pass SMB3 without being tempted to get the flutes.

Super Mario Sunshine. The idea of Mario blasting shit with water just didn't make any sense to me when it came out and didn't seem to belong in the Mario universe. It really was the game that made me drop the series, though the newer one where the perspective changes back and forth between 2D and 3D gameplay seems like a really clever idea. SMB3 is still my personal favorite.

But the water-blasting was great.
The FLUDD added so much depth to Mario's moveset, it raised his skill ceiling enormously while at the same time making it more accessible to casuals. That's good design.

I'm sure it was a fun game though I've never played it. I'm just saying that my initial reaction to it when it first came out and I saw footage of the gameplay was "that's fucking stupid". I still don't get it. The water theme just seems so out of left field to me.

Galaxy. Great production values and presentation and everything, I mean shit that intro with Bowser invading was fucking neat. Magikoopa blasting Mario into space to start off the adventure? Hell yeah.
Then you get to the actual game and it's the dullest shit. Stages pretend to be open-ended like 64 & Sunshine by having multiple stars in each, but really you're just retreading the same chain of planetoids with a slight change in destination at the end. And it's all so mindnumbingly easy compared to the previous 3D Marios. At least Galaxy 2 managed to fix almost everything wrong with this game, stages were limited to a couple stars at most and the revisits were usually a more challenging version of the first mission, plus there were tons more of said stages, and some semblance of challenge towards the end of it.
