Every enemy has a tell. Learn it and exploit it. Dodge when necessary; your shield is a crutch only with light attacks. Attack when you have a clear opening.

souls is all about identifying enemy patterns and learning how to effectively deal with them
with iudex, raise your shield and circle him. standing still with your shield will get you killed. you want to minimize the hits and leave enough stamina for a hit

Still died to this boss 4 times or so with the deprived class. He kills you in two hits and his attacks are slightly inconsistent. He is not easy without a shield. He is still the boss I died the most to in the game so far (5 bosses in).

He telegraphs his moves pretty hard and if you aggro him and just roll under his attacks you can get by pretty easy. I beat him first try without using Estus Flasks and I'm not amazing at Souls games by any means.

When I first started the game, it auto set my settings to High, and was running about 30 fps. When I got to this boss, I was stuck for a couple hours. I decided to lower my settings to Low and see if the framerate improved, which it did. I tried fighting the boss again at 60 fps and beat it easily. The second phase became a complete cakewalk.
