Manga invented the character. CD stole the concept, reworked it and kept her name. It also made her a damsel and forever fucked up the character since Japan is obsessed with Amy being a squealing nuisance as opposed to the euro concept where she became a competent fighter and badass in the Fleetway Comics in the UK.

Fleetway Amy got a lot better, they toned her down and evened her out a fair bit, especially when she became the de facto leader of the FF while sonic was AWOL. Contrast that to Sally in Archie who was pure fucking GRL POWR and amy looks a lot better in contrast. Plus archie amy was even bloody worse. In fleetway they had a great running thing where you could never tell if amy was actually into sonic or she was pretending to be a fangirl just to fuck with him and deflate his ego when it needed it. She was was smarter and more proactive by the end.

Sally has fluctuated a lot. I never took her for a "Gurl Power" character in SatAM, because of how natural she was. Her constant snark humanized her, also the very demonstrable fact that her movement wasn't much of anything without Sonic.

Creating a solid threat of a totally redeemable villain, removing the deus ex machina of sonic being able to go super and bullshit his way out of any threat AND come up with a dark/evil parallel to the hero without technically creating a new OC?
