When the Adventure series got localized it caused problems since it was far more story heavy and actually took place on Earth, so Sega of America had to rewrite some stuff to sync it up with the Japanese lore.
They compromised by saying the characters name was Dr. Ivo Robotnik, with Sonic teasing him by calling him "Eggman." By Sonic Adventure 2 he adopted his nickname and started calling himself that, and as of the current games the whole Robotnik thing has been tossed out altogether.
It's like what happened with Princess Toadstool becoming Princess Peach, though that was more elegantly done since it was easy to say that Peach was just her first name.

In the comics, Eggman is really Robo-Robotnik, a version from an alternate dimension of the original Robotnik that was ripped to shreds at the molecular level. This Eggman won in his world by nuking Sonic and all his friends, got bored, and decided to fill the void left by Robotnik.

What I found interesting was that Sonic Adventure 2 was the first game where the Japanese version actually acknowledged an American name.
Japanese Sonic games never used "Robotnik" before. Then they HAD to use it in SA2 because they've established that Robotnik had a family, and that they were all Robotniks.

After they scrapped half the universe because the Penders lawsuit they stopped being super convoluted and instead just became really vanilla and boring. It's still not great but it's definitely an improvement.I miss Archie's Mega Man though.

The original Robotnik got killed in Endgame when they thought the comic was going to be cancelled. They needed an asspull to bring not only Robotnik back but also to explain why he has his Adventure design (robot body double).

Because when you have multiple hands on a story, especially one that's a licensed property and needs to advertise another series no matter what the current comic storyline is, you're bound to have a lot of problems.
Robotnik can't stay dead because he'll always be in the games proper. A writer comes on the project and decides to make some retcons so he can tell the story he wants to tell. A new Sega game comes out that conflicts with everything they've written but they still gotta incorporate it to create synergy.
