So I finally got around to playing Wario Land, and damn what a fantastic game. Is /v/ up for a Wario Land thread? Post about what a shame it is that we'll probably never get another Wario game as good as this due to the original dev team disbanding.

>tfw manage to find all the treasures but still only got the Castle Ending
They kinda went a bit too far with how many coins you needed for it. I got 3000 while 100% the game and I still need a couple thousand more.

I guess /v/ doesnt like the wario games that much.
>>
>>334392118

/v/ is too underage to have played an original Gameboy Game let alone discuss Wario Land.

I used to play this with the original Super Mario Land all the time when I was in school.
>>
>>334392118
Does this game play like the later games? I played a bit of the Wario Land game that was given to 3DS ambassadors (3, I think).
>>
I personally didn't like the first Wario Land as much as 2. That might have just been me being spoiled though.

If you liked Wario Land 1, you really need to try out Wario Land for the Virtual Boy. It's similar and surprisingly good.

Wario Land 2 and 3 are really different, but I think I like them a lot more than the original Wario Land. Really unique kind of puzzle platformer without being slow.
>>
If you have a Wii or Wii U, I recommend Wario Land Shake It.

It's really fun and difficult if you try the challenges
>>
That fucking level with the fire/lava from the left side inching closer on you scared the shit out of 8 year old me back then.
>>
>>334393357
Pretty much, /v/ is way too fast for its own good.

But having played it now makes me regret not playing it back in the day.
>>
I remember playing this with my childhood best friend and having a fucking blast. I liked the simplicity of the horned helmet charge. Good times.

But we did.
>>
>>334393651

Why regret it? You played a good video game. Doesn't matter if you played it on release or 10 years later.
>>
>>334392118
Oh man the nostalgia. I love this game. Played it a lot as a kid. The first time you could play "the bad guy".

I can remember that it was a real bitch getting enough coins. I don't think I ever got there.
>>
I loved how world one was flooded after you beat it.
>>
>>334393728
I mean from now on anon, I'm sure WL4 is just s good or better.
>>
>>334393728
My fucking childhood
>>
Man, I love this game. Beat it when I was a kid. Haven't played it in forever, I suppose I'm due.

I wish I could get my cousin's copy of SML2.
>>
>>334392118
>They kinda went a bit too far with how many coins you needed for it

There's some level where you can get a gazillion coins super fast, then do the minigame and pray for luck

Or use that "press select 16 times" code to get max coins
>>
>>334393574
I thought the challenges were arbitrary one-shot garbage or tedious collection.

Good Feel relies way too much on collectables everywhere, it's so easy and dull.
>>
>>334393743
True, what I'm trying to say is that it would have blown me the fuck away back in the day.

Still excellent game though.
>>
>>334393531
2 > 1 > 3 > 4
>>
>>334393827
I really like how this game did secrets. Not too cryptic or obvious, feels real good to finally get all the treasures.
>>
>>334393728
It was no 2 or 3. Less levels, mandatory treasure collection instead of optional, different music style that I didn't like as much, and less wario transformations (and really stupidly inconsistent because you have a health system with it).
>>
>>334393951
That's the secret level on World 1 with all the crabs right? Seems more like a grind than fun.
>>
>>334394036

>True, what I'm trying to say is that it would have blown me the fuck away back in the day.

Well it blew you away now and i'm glad you appreciated it. See whenever anyone says "you're just viewing things with nostalgia goggles" you know they're full of bullshit. Because nobody is ever nostalgic for a terrible game or shitty game.
>>
>>334394119
I remember the one that eluded me for so long was the whale treasure in one of the final world levels
>>
I only played Wario Land 3 so I can't really speak for them all but goddamn I replayed 3 so many times.
Also has the best final boss desu and best ending track
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AH70CwY__Ms
>>
>>334394209
I don't remember really, I think any short level with lots of those big coins would work

And yes it is grind, of course as a kid I died a million times and had to redo tons of levels to find treasures so it didn't feel like it

Jet hat best hat

It's a shame they never expanded on Wario World. It was such a weird mix, kinda sucks Wario couldn't continue paralleling Mario with weird takes on platforming.

That was probably the hardest one to find in the game desu. Took me a good 4 tries through the level before I tried exploring that suspicious wall by the key. But that feeling when you finally get it right, so good mayne.
>>
I played it recently, too.

Yeah, it's funny, I can't play WL2 through 4 because it's all collecting money and treasure and shit, too focused on that.

But WL1, man, that was an enjoyable romp.
>that subtle Wario's running speedup at the Bonus Screen as the game progresses
>>
>>334394464
Jet Hat was indeed the best. Jetting through levels was so much fun. Bull hat also ended up being a lot more useful than I thought it was going to be, that butt stomp was real good.

Dragon Hat has to be the most boring tho.
>>
>>334394839
That's a fear I have now, since the next WL games are so different I dont know if I'll enjoy them as much as this one.

Still one of my favourites alongside the first two Wario Lands. Jesus Christ though the final boss was a head wrecker. Of course I went Wario 100% of the time, just loved his little pixel running around dropping bombs.

I can't, mainly because I HATE judgmental games. So any games with ranking, tracks X number of treasures that you get one shot at (currency is fine, Great Cave Offensive is fine), etc.

If you don't have that mental tick, I think you'd be just fine.

If you hold up you can actually jump way higher and farther than normal. It almost breaks the game but it sure is nice for those difficult parts.

>>334393553
That's the beauty of the series. 1 and VB had that mix between a classic Mario game with the power-ups and what would later become the series norm for Wario games with the extra emphasis on exploration.

2 and 3 focused more on exploration and platforming/environment puzzles.

4 and Shake It brought back health and focused on precision platforming with exploration on the side, somewhere between 1/VB and 2/3's styles.

Not to mention Wario World providing a unique take of the formula in a 3D environment. I just wish the game was longer, or that it had a sequel.

There was generally something for everyone; prefer how Wario Land 2 plays? Wario Land 3 is probably your next bet. Wario Land 1 your favorite? If at all possible, try tracking down the VB Wario Land.

The only real stinker was Master of Disguise, which wasn't the worst game around, but significantly underwhelming compared to any other Wario platformer.
>>
>>334395694
I don't think any of them are permanently missable, WL2 through 4. I don't know, it's been awhile. I just like more leisurely, like Great Cave Offensive.

>>334395005
So what does that game play like, anyway?
>>
>>334393357
ayy, I've both games for GameBoy but only played Super Mario Land 3 - Wario Land through. Still one of the best GameBoy games I've ever played. The music is still one of my favourite video game soundtracks.

It's literally a Bomberman game, they added Wario in to make it appeal for an American release and he just took it the fuck over.

Basically you choose whether to play as Wario or Bomberman and blast the fuck out of clones of the other one throughout the story mode, then there were bosses and permanent upgrades you would earn, one of them being a permanent motorcycle.

Wario Lands had such unique, fitting music.

I gave my old GB Pocket with a copy of this game to a friend of mine when I bought a GBC (or GBA?). Because that was the only game I had that she liked. Wonder if she still has it somewhere. I miss that game. Never beaten it, though.

Pretty sure now that I shouldn't really have done it. On the other hand, no idea what would happen to it if my younger self kept it...
