Really? I had a ton of issues with the game on Win7 running in XP compatibility mode. The final boss especially had a ton of slowdown. The dev even said it was a known issue that came from the game being based on an ancient version of Game Maker. Was it patched?

Yeah, it runs fine early on. It's the late game where most of the issues pop up, unfortunately. It's a shame, too, because the final boss is really fun on XP.

rex rocket - cave story gameplay but harder, sci-fi
monaco: what's yours is mine - co-op game about stealthing and committing crimes, very frantic
spelunky (free) - a proper roguelike with indiana jones shit. very hard, very tight design. most platformer 'roguelikes' that come oout don't hold a candle to it
shovel knight: a very well-made homage to megaman and castlevania
super crate box (free) - an arcade game with an interesting design. one of the few arcade games that i can play for hours on end
undertale: humourous RPG-lite with minigames for battles, and a moral choice system. for bonus points, it triggers /v/
VVVVVV - C64 style platformer with gravity mechanics
space funeral (free) - weird RPG
megaman unlimited (free) - a megaman fangame on par with the better official games
charles barkley: shut up and jam: gaiden (free) - post-apocalyptic basketball RPG
tiny barbarian DX - very similar to shovel knight, but is influenced more by treasure games.
maldita castilla (free) - ghosts and goblins-type game with spanish folklore theme
yume nikki (free) - dream exploration game
ib (free) - adventure game about going inside paintings
noitu love 2 - pc-focused sidescrolling action game. sort of like how a 2D CAG would work. great art.
LISA - not easy to summarize, but you've probably heard of it

It's like a love letter to Super Metroid, Contra, Bionic Commando, HR Geiger, and weird 80s sci fi.
It was developed by one person in his spare time just like Cave Story was, and it also has a dedicated speedrunning mode.
It's a fantastic game.
