I rolled up a Swordmaster, its somewhere between a paladin,samurai and spellsword. Order was mostly archers and mages. Destro was all 8 foot orc tanks and dark elf assasin healers. I single handedly protected all my squishys for hours, and it felt great. I walked out geared out and leveled up. WoW dosen't ask you to kill 10 enemy players at level 5

All a private server is is a communication protocol which pretty much just tells people's computers what things to load, where they are etc.

People having been playing on these servers, which before nostralius, have been typically horribly coded, underpopulated, or horribly run with p2w schemes by admins, only to spend months investing in a new character when they shift private servers. More people end up paying for legitimate legacy servers than you ever see on free private servers. The most popular free Runescape private server had maybe 1k active players on it. When Jagex did it themselves and charged a subscription fee, OSRS instantly shot up to 40k consistent players. 150k players on Nostalrius is easily indicative of a million people who'd pay $15/month for the exact service Nostalrius was offering, except endorsed by Blizzard.

People would pay for a vanilla server. One major advantage a Blizz server would have over private one would be that it would drastically limit the amount of alt accounts people can make (unless they intend on blowing lots of cash). This would mean that individual characters become very important investments that you can't just throw away for a cheap MC chest loot and never log on that character again. This would bring the sense of a community even closer together because you have to take care of your reputation with other raiders/pvpers unless your going to pay extra money on multiple accounts.
That and if blizzard was able to make the server 100% bug free, that alone would bring in some numbers.

An Anon in another thread suggested "ironman" servers, where LFG and LFR are both disabled, and stats, exp-gain etc. are tweaked to make the game challenging again. That still wouldn't fix the removal of fun shit like the "useless" abilities like mind control and control pet.

Fun Fact: When Vanilla Gaming started out their vanilla server, they were receiving around 10k donation within the first few months of hosting. Funny enough this killed the enthusiasm for the devs to push bugfixes and such and instead decided to coast on the donation money for years and years until scriptcraft arrived and they got their shit together.
To say that all the private server players have no money is stupid. None of these servers are getting paid by the hosts own pockets aside from the initial launch..
