The first parts of Dark Souls 2 blow anything in DaS1 out of the water. It's just that the game has a bunch of terrible design decisions and was rushed in the later parts.
I still think it's better than DaS1. At least DaS2 had nice levels instead of the garbage dump that was DaS1.
