I thought it checks the barcode on it against your account, and if the next person renting it finds that it's not the real disc and reports it, you get charged for it.

The only way I could see this working out in the end is if they let you use prepaid visas. Otherwise the game will get rented again, and someone will report it and they will charge your card since you rented with it

I don't see the point to this. It's not even a deal, like they charge you $10 or something crazy low to where it's worth it. All you get is a used disc with no case or manual or anything. It's like paying full price at gamestop for a used game
I have a disk labeler so if you just use that on the disk, people assume it is broken and you don't get charged. At least, I would assume

Don't know about redbox, but you can sign up for gamefly and just claim you never got the game and they send another. Pretty easy to steal games that way
