Game was ok on release, had a few problems such as bad stat/enemy scaling and no ingame server browaer. He released 2 updates (i think) a few weeks after release.
Then there was nothing for about a year until he updated about the new quest system on the webpage.
Then after posting that update, he completely disappeared off the internet for 2 FUCKING YEARS. No website, twitter, or facebook updates. Same thing with his wife. Most thought he just took the money and ran. Some people were seriously worried they died in a car crash or some shit.
Then around summer last year he suddenly tweets a fucking update out of nowhere. No explanation for the complete silence the past couple of years or anything. It was as if he got put into cryosleep, woke up, and continued on like nothing happened.
He's been posting updates on twitter since then, one every month or two. But shit nigga everyone is still confused as to what the fuck happened during that time.

The updates he released were hotfixes to fix a few of the more present bugs (hangglider ranger backstep, among others) but no more than that. No content was actually added.
And yeah, he absolutely fell off the grid and acted like he was never gone. Still won't tell anyone what happened. My friend and I are likely going to be able to do our third "X years of no-content cube world updates" stream this year, as well.

In short, Goblinworks was unable to secure enough funding to continue developing the game with a full crew and Paizo (owners of the PF licence) decided to put the game for sale in order for someone else to continue.
Supposedly a buyer was found, and meanwhile the game was put under a skeleton crew for some very basic development. I still hope they can pull it through, but it's one of those "maybe if I check back in three or four more years" situations.

The P&P version is basically 3.5 with extra toppings, yes. Played it quite a bit between 2009-2015, before moving into D&D 5e (I'm still running a long-standing campaign with PF, though).
PFO, however, has a substantially different system. For example, a central aspect of the game is the "keyword" system, in which an item can have, say, "Arcane, Heavy, Metal" keywords that then interact with feats (which mostly just share the name with the P&P feats and here are more like skills) which use said keywords.
Combat is pretty standard for MMOs, though stiff dysfunctional as this stage, I'm afraid.
So in short, PFO has a lot of elements for PF, but they are fundamentally different takes on said elements.
The worst part about Chucklefish is that they still make a tonne of money from publishing.
They recently published Stardew Valley and that sold better than hotcakes that came with coupons for free blowjobs.
