Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 had a lot of problems, even when they released. Though mostly related to the camera and how characters can control in tighter spots.

Sonic Heroes and Shadow The Hedgehog were not games you'd expect from a studio as famous as Sega. The only thing polished about them were the character models (that's a joke about how shiny they were), too much of the game design was poorly copy and pasted (you can literally fall through segments of the levels where they weren't copy and pasted properly). Although Heroes and Shadow were significantly weaker titles than both Adventures, they were both at least still playable. They're the games that hurt Sonic's reputation, especially during a time when Sega was almost going bankrupt before Sammy bought them.

You also have to remember how awful the Rush and Sonic 4 titles were. Between 2004 and 2010, there wasn't a single good Sonic game.

Sonic Unleashed was half good, but the Werehog decision butchered the other half, on top of the fucking medallion collecting that was required to continue the story. Might have been better received if you played as Knuckles instead (would have made far more sense), but after 06 Sega was hard-set on making a game where you only played as Sonic.

Secret Rings and Black Knight were worse than Shadow.

Rancid level designs, a pace too fast to accurately see what's coming (worse than Sonic Advance 2), terrible enemy placement, getting locked in rooms until you beat every enemy, the game is just not fun to play. The Sonic Generations 3DS version of one of its levels was better.

I think you might have missed the whole fiasco surrounding NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. The devs who quit Sega suring development had no qualms with throwing all of Sega's dirty laundry into the street for everyone to see. Long story short, since 1999 Sega has been giving all of their teams shit funds and shit deadlines. They also come in to meddle/interfere all the fucking time but never offer additional resources or time for devs to make the changes they demand.

If the Classic games also had SA2's style of level-design, you wouldn't be complaining. You're not looking at this objectively in the slightest. Sure, SA2 would have had more-interesting levels if it DID have more alternate routes, but there's nothing wrong with the way they were made as it is. Your "complaint" isn't a complaint.

You're projecting mighty strongly here, hun. Playing as Knuckles in City Escape or Radical Highway is considerably more fun than any of his actual levels, because treasure hunting in little arenas isn't as fucking fun as blazing through paths and ways.

Most of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2's complaints come from different play styles interrupting otherwise fast and smooth gameplay, which would have been fixed if the characters played more traditionally (same levels, one or two different/unique abilities, which is what Knuckles and Rouge had in SA2 but unfortunately had few instances to properly play them).
