I doubt it, not because the game itself gets the basics wrong. Terrible framerate, terrible jaggies everywhere and in general a really poor image quality. I tried the demo or whatever, but all those issues were just too big for me to get over it. I wanted to like it, but since they cant make the game playable in a way that doesnt make me puke, I cant force myself to get it.

JRPGs were far from mainstream when VII came out. Square and Sony made them mainstream with VII and even then it mostly extended to FF. If you look up the sales numbers, most "classic" PS1 JRPGs never cracked a million. Square was also rather niche back then, so its reputation didn't mean much.

This is a Game Informer podcasr, but the first 38 minutes is all them putting out details on their playthroughs.
A lot of concerns are taken care of here, you can go off road, you can crash onto monsters and other things and damage your ride, car tries to help people who can't drive well not fuck up, you can go off the beaten path and the "linear style" doesn't stop that, feels like going through parts of older games (one of the guys used going from Midgar to Junon as an example, so it's not like you will have walls, it'll be that the next area has realistic obstacles and place you will have to traverse to go forward), and you have plenty of secrets and caves to discover as early as chapter 1. Rides will be semi long, and you will have ways to skip longer travel times later, implying fast travel like stuff. Character dialogue between the bros will be dynamic to help work out the long trips. Tabata loves 6, guys say fans of earlier games have huge surprises waiting, he might have also been coy by saying no Tonberries, as the GI staff found a glimpse in a monster file while looking in places.
All in all, said that Square and Tabata's team is not BS'ing about transparency and working hard to facilitate their fans l, but also to he as creative as they can to make a good game and great experience.

XIII sold around 5 million so around there would be where XV would stand since this is tailored as the next iteration of final fantasy. New characters, new setting, etc.
Of course I don't count XIII-2 and LR because those who didn't enjoy XIII didn't really want to buy the sequels to them.
Newcomers will come and might enjoy XV. Some diehards are pissed, some are meh about the changes
