some games play really well with an open world, some games play well in a linear fashion. MGS for example benefits greatly from the linear structure of pretty much every game but V, whereas a game like Just Cause wouldnt really work in a linear campaign because most of the fun of that game comes from making stuff blow up yourself, not from scripted setpieces.

I think the absolute worst is that "open world" really just means a lot of empty space. Because of that empty space, the content is pared down. A half mile of empty plains and a "city" which is made up of about ten houses since the game can't handle both the big area and the environmental objects at once. A lot of uneventful traveling to get to a lackluster point of interest.
