I don't know shit about racing games, and I'm complete garbage at sim racers, but I love the everloving fuck out of these games.

I want to get into racers more--largely because of OutRun 2--but realistic physics bum me out.

Are there other arcade-y racers like these where I can drift across half the course and have a great sense of speed?

General arcade racers also welcome

Technically there is still Outrun 2006 if you only played 2, and the first Sonic All Stars Racing

Outrun 1 is also pretty good but it's a very different game, if you're curious check out the 3DS release, it's fucking excellent, and the 3D is actually amazing for once.

Daytona USA and SEGA Rally are also pretty good but they have very little content to offer, it's all about mastering the few stages and cars it has. And there's not pre-built drifting mechanics, actually pulling off a successfull drift is pretty hard.

Daytona USA 2 is also pretty good in the same vein of Daytona 1, but there's no port, so you'll have to emulate the Sega Model 3 Arcade system.
>>
Daytona (Has a small entry barrier for learning gear drifting but it's fun as fuck once you get into it)
Ridge Racer (start with type4 or 7)
Burnout 3/Revenge
FlatOut (a bit more rugged but still pretty arcadey)
Initial D Street/Extreme stage.

If you can find a cabinet near you, Maximum Tune 3-5 are some of the best arcade racers out there, really nice physics, a good skill barrier and ceiling, and addictive as fuck.
Beware you will not even realize how much money you've spent on it until you hit 60 plays.

I consider 2 and 2006 to be one big thing, as the latter just adds what boils down to a mission disk. You're right though, if you only had 2, you owe it to yourself to whip out SP/2006

>if you're curious check out the 3DS release
please don't. Mame's superior in every way
>>
>>334284115

Thanks.

I actually want to get OutRun 2006; I was a dumbass a few years ago when I bought 2. I was looking for 2 because I loved the arcade, and I didn't do research and didn't realize 2006 was the same game with more stuff, so I kept passing it up while I was looking for 2.

Now I can't seem to find the Xbox version of 2006 for less than ~$40. I don't want the PS2 version because I want the gas on a trigger; though I'm considering getting a racing wheel if I can find enough racing games I like for one system to justify it.

I have the OutRun 3D classics, and you're right; the 3D is actually great. Very crisp. But to be honest, anytime I'm playing the original OutRun outside of an arcade I just start to wish I was playing 2019 instead.

I disagree with you, the original arcade game is locked to 30fps and 4:3, and a bunch of extra modes and options. Hell even the SEGA AGES Saturn port had 60fps if I remember correctly. And I really have to stress this, the 3D in the game is fucking amazing, I honestly only turn on the 3D for that game, I don't care for the 3D in the 3DS that much.

>superior
Even if you prefer the MAME version, you can turn off the 60fps and 16:9 modes and make it just like the original, so I don't see how it can be "superior", at best it's the same. The only flaw really in the 3DS version is SEGA losing the Ferrari license and having to change the car sprite slightly, for everything else it remains the same or you can turn on a bunch of extra stuff.

And even if you prefer playing on PC, there is such a thing called Cannonball which is a great port of Outrun. Get that instead of the MAME version.

>>334284514
Hey man I'm from /vr/ as well ;_;
>>
>>334284662
That's plenty for the game. Remember the original hardware it's made for. Try the cracked version, see how it pans out.
>>

>>
>>334284782
>the original arcade game is locked to 30fps
30 for road and sprites, 60 for backdrop

>even the SEGA AGES Saturn port had 60fps
and reviewers noted it feels off

The 60fps on the DS are produced by interpolating the underlying engine, which still runs at 30fps

>make it just like the original
except for the non-square pixels of the original, the screen size of the original

>The only flaw really in the 3DS version is SEGA losing the Ferrari license
kind of a big deal for me

>change the car sprite slightly
and the KTM ad, and the Marlboro ad ...

>Cannonball
no interest, I prefer the original

Same. Turns out that making racing games and sonic games about FAST is the proper way to do things. Who coulda guessed?
>>
>>334284984
Fuck that, it's a goddamn chore doing Golden Axe boost course for plat.
>>
>>334284841
I don't know why, but on the cracked version the game refuses to save my scores. It will save the "career" mode progress, it will save all unlockables. But if you go for plain outrun mode and do a score, it'll confirm your score right on top, then you exit and re-enter the game, and the score's gone. I really do want the scores, so it's kind of a big deal for me. I ended up buying it on disc. W10 is about to let me down on it though, as Securom is not working well on that (P)OS. Either I get the crack working by then, or I won't be joining the W10 masses
>>
>>334284841
>It's not on Steam anymore because the Ferrari license ran out
and Sega is doing nothing to negotiate the license. Though I also blame Ferrari for being so uptight about the best advertising they could ever get, and they don't even have to pay for it

Okay that's fine you prefer the original experience, I just don't see your perspective on why the MAME version is "superior in every way" and you would recommend it to other people over the 3DS version that has more features.

From what I gather you have a clear attachment to the original game and want it to be as close to it as possible. But I just don't see why adding extra options is a bad thing for most people, specially if they don't have a strong attachment to the original. Just feels to me like you're arguing out of a strong sense of nostalgia you have for the game. I mean not having the same ads is obviously not a big deal for most people, that hardly impacts the overall game.

And to be clear I'm not saying you shouldn't prefer the original, that's your choice to make, I just find it weird that you would repudiate the 3DS port to such an extent, it's a great port.
>>
>>334285139
That's one of the best boost race levels, that cave is nothing but drift + dodge boost chains.

You are getting level 4+ boost right?
>>
>>334285984
>has more features
some people understand that that's not necessarily a good thing

>I just don't see why adding extra options is a bad thing for most people
True, you don't

>specially if they don't have a strong attachment to the original
funny enough, that's secondary. When the 60fps mode is interpolated, it's kinda useless, when the graphics have broken aspect ratio, they're kinda useless as well

>you're arguing out of a strong sense of nostalgia you have for the game
right, all the way back to 2014

The first, Revolution and Rage are all a lot more challenging to control. Type 4 strikes the perfect balance between controlled drifting and the more guided style of the later games while also sporting the greatest aesthetic and sountrack of all time.

If you have a PS3, I enjoyed Mod Nation Racers a lot, though it's not really worth getting a PS3 for.

The track creator thing is cool though, and there are some REALLY neat custom maps. Obviously a bunch of boring tripe as well, but it's not too hard to find the good stuff.

The mechanics are solid, physics feel great, drifting's super emphasized. The mechanics of using drifting to build up your meter, which both boosting and shielding runs off of is well designed, and the items are super well designed.

>>
>>334289531
It doesn't have an Initial D feel at all, it's trance instead of Eurobeat and you'll play for at least an hour before you even need to turn, you can drift but almost never do it because it's more focused on straightaway highway driving, more focused on the engine (tuning cards, good shifting, even keeping your engine heat down so it doesn't blow up) than drifting.

Initial D Extreme Stage is disc only.
