Mars is hell man. Put on your heaviest armor, grab the TRK sniper or the Bear Killer if you have it, grab a secondary wep of your choice, tape ammo to every part of your body, and always keep your medkit charged.

I want to say a mix of both + them just making the best of what they had to work with.
Help me get into this game, lads. I beat the first mission (after having to repeat it because lol save issues) and I'm in front of Rimanah ready to tell him to send me on the next mission. But that was weeks ago. The font, even with the patch, is pretty tiny and there's o much shit to keep track of, it's killed my buzz. I went in the first mission, most weapons already available to me (is there even an incentive to visit the armoury?) and even with tons of kills I only had enough Brouzoufs to upgrade one implant (I chose adrenal glands) with no obvious effect on my performance.
I don't even know who I'm shooting, I can barely see anyone, I just shoot at the muzzle flashes of bullets whizzing past me until I see "you gain Brouzouf".
Give me a primer, /v/. I feel I can get into this with the right approach but it just seems like there's no real incentive to do anything or upgrade. I don't even remember if there's a difficulty setting, but if there was I set it to normal. If there is, I don't want to up it just to have more numbers against me.

Don't try to understand.
The game flips everything on you after you beat it the first time, and there are multiple endings. You can't figure anything out on your first play through.
I quit after the first mission as well. Then later I gave it another shot and could not stop playing.
Right now, your just playing a crazy French version of Doom. Grab some armor, find the gun you like best, and go kill shit while playing heavy metal music. Let the plot unfold and you will start to understand.
As far as upgrades and difficulty, the armor weapons are mostly just for fun, though there are some much better weapons in there as well.
Also. Cyber Legs. Just keep upgraded Cyber Legs.
Right now your fighting the easiest enemies in the game, but it does get a lot harder later and the enemies never stop re spawning.

The game doesn't provide you with anything, you have to wrestle everything from it : The story, the gameplay (those damn useless tutorials), the objectives (I always get lost on the maps)...This can be either rewarding or very frustrating, so don't force yourself to play if you don"t enoy it. The hardest part is getting to the first portal. Just run like hell, kill the helis, run to the ruins and tap the first portal there. After that, it's all easy-peasy, go right on the Weed Pirate Mountain (yes, really), then kill Deus Ex and go explore that part of the map etc. The portals stay active even if you lose all your resurrectors and restart the map.

Yep. Most of the early choices are "I know this guy we could go kill" or "I know this thing we should go destroy"
You can't really effect the plot until later on.

I also forgot to mention that some federals on the way to the portal have TPKs, those probably should be killed too (or avoided in some other way) because they can kill you in 2-3 shots through heavy armour.
But I think you can bypass a lot of them if you run on the ledge on the left part of the pass to ruins.

Croon is pretty good, sadly meme mode isn't practical, but the regular one is alright.
And pretty much any gun can be hipfired accurately with that one aug.

But I wish the metastreums had clearer combat roles. You have those guys, who kinda rush and try to bite you, four-armed dudes who do the same and throw fireballs sometimes, then werewolves, I think, aren't they melee too? And then there are hammer dudes (still die really fast) and those organic Federation robots who run at you and die really fast too.
