Base game was fantastic. Right level of immersion and action with an excellent AI.

Developed purely for PC.
Made in that sweet spot in time when graphics were good and a little story was expected, but gameplay was still king.

Fuck you, man. I played a ton of scary games. Silent Hill 1 through 4, Fatal Frame 2 and 3, Penumbra and Amnesia, the Clocktower games back in the day.

F.E.A.R. was more cheesy in its horror, sure, but it still had some great memorable spooks to it.

It uses literal jump scares, but still isn't really scary because Replicas are scared of you (for a good reason, too), Alma can't really hurt you and spooky ghosts look silly.

Replica assassins are kind of creepy though, but in a cool way. Liked fighting them.

I don't know, I think there are some nice spooks throughout the game. Like that shadow that disappears into the shallow water, or Alma popping up behind the window when you turn the power on.

Also, the replicas have this non-human feeling towards them that I feel adds to the horror and isolation.

The spooks are telegraphed by your interface flickering. Oh, my HUD does the spooky thing, time to put the gun away and enjoy the spook. Okay, it's over, back to the action.

Replicas feel more humane than a lot of supposedly human FPS antagonists, actually. I really feel for that one last guy every time I hear his desperate "He wiped out the whole squad!" on the radio. I'm sorry, last clone standing. Now, eat 10mm spikes.

Niggas hating on F.E.A.R. 2, when it's actually pretty spooky. You just need to look for the spooks. I noticed that when I started looking at every corner of the game. Alma pops up in a lot of places.

She does try to kill you at the very end. A very unorthodox final boss.

But yeah, it would have been better if the spooky parts could actually harm you in some way. The ghosts charging at you are okay, but something more would be appreciated.

One of the early spooky sections of the game starts of with the annoying hacker guy talking about pizza and anime conventions. Kinda ruins the mood.

The school hallway was phenomenal though.

only good level was school. rest of the game was heavily consolized with dumber ai and they took out all the aweosme jackie chan melee. they dropped so many effects like particles and smoke filling the rooms during a firefight. awful fucking helmet hud.

Eh, FEAR 1 had some dumb humour moments too. The fat guy comic relief being there especially during the ending. I also recall in one of the expansions it was supposed to be a really tense and spoopy moment but meanwhile you could hop around activating the copy machines to make butt photocopies.

There is literally nothing unscientific about a game feeling pleasing to play and control, even though CoD is a symbol of things people don't like about the industry it's still got excellent shooting and is obviously addictive since people can play so much of it for however many years straight now.

I liked that and thought it helped with them. It's like with the radio in Silent Hill, they're telling you something is coming and sometimes it's just a neat little gag, sometimes it's a bit creepy, sometimes it's straight up a great spook.

And sometimes it's not telegraphed at all and it starts bleeding in what you thought were safe non-horror action segments

And sometimes the scare happens in the distance and isn't mentioned anywhere and you'd have to be paying attention to the background to notice it

I will admit that F.E.A.R. is nowhere near around being the scariest horror game. But it's still pretty great by vidya horror standards. And then you add in the fact it has unarguably the funnest gameplay of any horror video game and, well, you get yourself a 10/10 game.

FEAR 3 was the first in the series I played and it's literally shit. Apart from fun effects like exploding dudes, gore, kicking, slomo, and the shotgun, the rest was so bad. I could understand what the story wanted to tell me for the most part, but why did an entire city become expert zombie knife throwers (also most annoying part of the game)? Worse than Call of Duty singleplayer.

I own all of that and played a few hours of the first but fear 3 left a bad aftertaste. I'm sure I'll get back to it someday...
