Yes. Especially the spellcasters. You start at level 1 in Baldur's Gate. So the casters have only like 2 spells a day anyway. So in the beginning they will be mostly attacking with slings or darts. Throwing daggers are also viable.

Not at all, actually. Fighter/mage is one of the strongest class combinations.
The fighter gives decent hp and good Thac0, while the mage enables all kinds of buffing spells or otherwise.
The downside is that while wearing armor no spells can be cast and that the fighter/mage can't put more than 2 points into weapon skills.
With pre-buffing those downsides become irrelevant however.

You can get a sword by solving the riddle of the demon. You can also use the new NPC Corwin and equip her with arrows +3 (which you find in the castle).
Another option is to side with Caelar, she can hurt that guy.
There is also a spell your mages can learn, enchant weapons.

Because Winthrop stands out. Everyone who played BG1 heard that from him. Much of BG wasn't voiced, so having an NPC talk one sentence was a big deak. Likely that NPC had no other spoken lines.
Spoken lines were always memorable and tailored to specific NPCs.
Compare to Skyrim where almost all NPCs have the same lines (and the same voice actor). The few unique lines they have, are drowned in either repetition or meaningless background chatter.
That blacksmith in Whiterun for example. She is the best blacksmith blah blah, but that looses all meaning repeated 20 times in a session.
