Those are his treatments Dr. Sofia Amaral designed for him to prevent the chronon disease/syndrome from consuming him and turning him into a shifter.
A shifter is someone who's alive and isn't at the same time. One person with multiple personalities all stuck together. They only show up when time stutters occur.
In an email I read in game, a "shifter" wrote that he's in constant pain until stutters occur, which he considers his "breathing room".
It's a lot of shit to talk about. Remedy did a good job once again with background story.
