Civ 5 with the Community Patch Project (hugely improved AI, huge balance changes including reworked Happiness system so you can actually go wide, new city-state system where you can no longer buy influence but have to create diplomat units + new CS quests, civ IV diplomacy features, more luxuries, enhanced UI) is probably the best civ experience

Going wide in non-modded Civ V is absolutely retarded. Your science is cut almost in half, it takes forever to get a new social policy, and if you don't get the Notre Dame, you can kiss any golden age good bye until the Atomic Era.

There shouldn't be a happiness penalty for founding new cities. That's absolutely retarded. Ditto for conquering cities. It makes no sense to have riots in your capitol because you took the city of someone who tried invading you.

Not only does CPP adjust the warmonger penalties but the main two policy trees are rebalanced (as it's a rebalance of the whole game) into a choice between tall or wide (Liberty renamed to Progress)

I haven't dabbled in large overrhauls because then I end up getting confused by mechanical changes when I don't use them, iis there a more conservative mod with the same idea that just addresses the few core things as minimally as possible

Yes, I don't have the big overhaul mods either, because they're essentially creating a new game. I just got a mod that cut penalties for expansion in half. Just look up happiness in the mod section.

I also got a mod that makes war monger hatred go down every turn, so even if you completely wipe an asshole out, you'll only be hated for 25-30 turns after.

Miller Projection. They wanted to capture the feel of that map projection instead of the actuality of landmass.

They should make Civ 6 a hex globe, IMO. I've been waiting for someone to go with a globe in a 4X for a while.

I have around 500 hours of Civ V singleplayer, but I currently only get enjoyment out of playing Civ from player 6 player FFA with NQ mod and pangaea map. Going back to singleplayer sounds awful.

A few tiles will have to be pentagons and you'll need some irregular adjustments for cities near those points.

Not sure what you can do about combat.
Could just leave it in as a somewhat interesting mechanical thing.
A city with just 5 adjacent tiles should be easier to defend.
Maybe it 1 extra tile beyond those 5 will have to count as adjacent. Just like the city gets extra workable tiles.
