I'd say it's still in the very early stages of visual based VR. With time tech will get better, parts get cheaper, and devs become more experienced with the hardware.
What do you guys think.
>>
Citing poor utilization as evidence of poor hardware instead of just calling it nogaems aside, I noticed a number of people commenting on Giant Bomb being consciously negative/cynical in the stream, and I didnt notice that at all. They were very fair, acknowledging pros and cons, finding emergent fun shit (and noting that the little details are some of the best parts) and plainly stating "This is fun. I would play more of this," "This is a problem that needs to be addressed"/"I wish they would do this, "This is not worth the price"/"These are tech demos and cash ins," etc. They showed excitement (or at least positivity) for the legitimately good stuff and derision for the crap/problems.

If you don't praise something as the best thing ever and look past any flaws then you are labelled as a cynical and jaded asshole.

That's why they get hate because of the E3 streams, millenials who just got into gaming expect them to be hyped for the generic cover shooters and shit gimmicks after seeing a 2 minute trailer.

You're right it had games but the tech was shit and didn't work, no motion controllers do.

So it's the exact opposite of VR, the tech is golden but it has no games.

I think it's better to have working tech and worry about waiting for games than the other way around.

it's hard to catch something when you can't see your hands

one of the main reasons why football players drop passes is because they looked away before the ball got to their hands. watching the object travel into your hands is a major cue on when to close them. also helps in telling you where they are in space.

doesnt help that the people doing these demos are unathletic as fuck with zero eye-hand coordination in the first place. fat lazy people are not good for demonstrating this shit.

He did say multiple times that he had it cinched tighter than was recommended as well as that he didnt feel any wear from using it for an extended period. The only comment regarding discomfort was the one guy's glasses being pressed into his face, again because it had been cinched quite tight and he was trying to get it on quickly.

The effect on hair is basically the same as you'd get from any other headmount.

I know I always have to look at where my hands are going to make sure that they land on my keyboard and mouse. It's not like humans have any sort of awareness of their surroundings without looking at shit.

>>
>>333871230
What are you even bitching about?
>>
>>333870824

That's finding objects in space via muscle memory. If your keyboard/mouse were somewhere different every time you reached for them, it wouldn't be so intuitive.

Catching something, the act of closing your hand as something touches it, is much different from knowing where shit is on your desk you fucking retard.

Look away and have someone tap your palm and pull it away quickly. See how easy it is to catch their fingers. Now do it while looking, it'll be much easier. When catching without looking, the nerves in your fingers/hand have to relay the information and have the order to close relayed back before doing so. When you can see the object, you anticipate the impact and actually begin the process of ordering the hands to close before the object touches them.
>>
>>333870990
you're full of shit. Latency of sub 120 Hz is avoided at all costs in VR, because it causes sickness. Plus, the accelerometers inside the trackers supplement the lighthouses by correcting the motion even if the IR tracking loses focus or slows down.

The real problem with the Vive is the same problem that steam has, no quality control

Day one out the game and there was a deluge of shovelware early access garbage just waiting in the wings.

The Vives release is a huge deal for Valve, to the point where they actually made something for it. But they didnt give a fuck about anything else for it, no quality control, no one at Valve to go "Hey that kinda dogshit, come back when its not!"

So now there's a couple cool things for the Vive, some stuff that wasnt made for it originally but it has support or plans to support it, and a bunch of early access shit that they want 20+ dollars for, with like an hour of content each.

Now people are taking the giant bomb streams as proof that VR isnt worth it, and I cant really blame them.

Technical issues aside, like how some games render onto the screen, no.
Some games would work, but that doesn't mean they would work well. FPSs would make you feel quite dizzy.
Racing games, as long as the camera remains within the car, I see no problems, unless you get carsick easily.

Mostly though you would have shit like this:
Grand strategy game. View the battlefield from 200 meters above ground. All is great. Except the mouse cursor would be a 2d sprite rendering 2 cm from your face. You would need to focus back and forth for each click.

Has there been any research done on if wearing the oculus / vive for prolonged periods of time can have adverse effects on a person's eye sight? I'm not a biologist but from what I've read eyes are very delicate and messing with their perception can cause them to be permanently damaged, like when someone who doesn't need glasses wears glasses and their eyes adjust to where they'll need glasses.

Like, I can't trust this technology not to turn me into a four-eyes, especially so early into their cycle.

I think the VR hate is overblown, but I am starting to rethink my preorder.

I could live with the barren launch, I could just about put up with the bad resolution but im struggling to justify $800-900 on an unreliable product.

There are too many reports of various issues with the Vive, from tracking, to display, lenses and unrefined design choices. Im scared that ill receive a faulty unit and have to go through the headache of sending it back.

The problem with VR right now is that it seems like everyone just jumped on the hype of it being VR and forgot to make genuinely good games.
Games that just rely on a neat control gimmick to be interesting get stale quick.

I think the medium is just new and needs some time to simmer before it can truly prosper.

unlike the other 2 tard replies i can tell you there actually was concern

you retraing your eyes with VR
normally you move your eyes with distance
with VR you look at 2 screen flatly wich retrains to no eye movement

the result is a issue like someone who is cross-eyes - object perception is fucked temporarily.

Oculus actually warns against doing anything serious after it's use.

"Do not drive, operate machinery, or engage in other visually or physically demanding activities that have potentially serious consequences — or other activities that require unimpaired balance and hand-eye coordination — until you have fully recovered from any symptoms"

There have been studies that show that being too close to a screen doesn't (permanently) adversely affect eyesight, and that artificial 3d doesn't (permanently) adversely affect eyesight.

There are temporary effects where users' eyes feel fatigued, ESPECIALLY with 3d because it uses some tricks that your brain doesn't ever really experience in real life. But that's all temporary

Screens haven't been around long enough to have many long-term (we're talking a full lifetime, here) studies, but the studies we do have say that permanent eye damage, just like carpal tunnel, is caused my repetitive stress. Looking at the same thing for hours everyday is what causes the permanent damage. It doesn't matter if that thing is a 3d HMD, a 2d monitor, or an old painting.

If you looked at it as often as you look at your monitor, then yes, it would. Again, eye injury is primarily due to repetitive motion. I don't think anyone ever WOULD look at a painting that much, but it was just to drive home the point that it doesn't really have to do with the technology.

28 here.
6'2 and 176 pounds.
Even if I eat a shit load I was never obese just a bit overweight.
Most I ever weighed was 215 pounds at 6'2 and that was when I would make a meal with a box of kraft mac and cheese and a can of chilli.
I would eat the whole thing in one sitting.

Now I just eat less but still not that healthy.
I eat a cup of all bran in the morning and a banana but I still eat shit like hot cheetos and pizza.

I guess the thing that helps is that I walk around 15 miles a week and run a mile every other day.

Of what? You act like there is anything inherently substantial about it that isn't already basically offered by existing games and systems. What specifically does it have the potential to do that I should be so excited about?
