Man that shit scared me with the PS3
It was the slim and I'm like
>wow nice it just sucks the disk in, so modern
and then it sounds like its breaking it apart
I honestly would've been extremely bothered if I ever played ps3 games off discs instead of CFWing it straight away and playing off an 1tb hdd
I mean CD/dvd drives on pc can be pretty fucking loud too but atleast those noises make sense.

take a listen to a WD Black HDD sometime, i bought a 2TB one last black friday for $100 and I thought i got a dead unit as soon as I fired it up it started grinding and grunting at me constantly. Emailed WD and they said its completely normal and safe because this is a "performance drive" and if I wanted silence I should have bought a Green.
I have a sound dampened Define R5 and can still hear it across the room.
>>333867792
Thats odd because it was particularly a WD black I put into that ps3 and I never heard it, though thats a 2.5
Also green is powersaving, they are the louder drives I had from them
Even than, the loudest, oldest IDE drive I have still has nothing on a DVD drive spinning a disc at full speed, which still had nothing on the crunching noises my PS3 drive makes.
>>333868051
I use an external CD drive so its extra loud, but my old ASUS combo drive wasnt as loud as this HDD.
Then again I never used my CD drive all that much.
just got old fat ps3
should I throw a refurb'd 240GB SSD in it or is it bottlenecked
>>333868529
Wow we are having quite the opposite experiences, my samsung external is the most quiet dvd drive I've used.
I remember back when I still had a built in one (like 7-8 years ago I guess) I always had to make sure I dont leave a disc in there, because I'd freak the fuck out when it randomly spins it up for no reason.
Something sucks with that HDD, the worst I had is that you could hear the ticking/clicking noise even over the fan noise of the machine, but thats still not louder than reading a disc.

My LG external was like $5 at a thrift store so its probably shitty quality.
The only time I really hear it is when its reading, but its my mass storage drive (games are stored on an 850 EVO 500GB) so I rarely hear it spin up, but when it does its loud as shit. It works fine so fingers crossed, WD wont accept it for return since its in perfect working order.
>>333869367
Still kind of sucks, I don't even let my drives spin down and never hear them right now
Had a WD green die, so bought a Seagate one instead so far so good, samsung had been the loudest so never again, I had a drive from them vibrating so hard, my PC was in the adjacent on a shelf and the drive resonated the case and shelf so hard it came through the wall as a deep ringing kind of sound.
>>333869776
Im gonna try dampening it with some rubber padding I have laying around, maybe minimize the case vibration. The reason I got the 2TB is because my old Seagate 1TB died last year after almost 6 years of continuous use, theyre very iffy. If it lasts the first two weeks, a Seagate will probably last 5+ years.

I hope, in the end its just 4tb of porn so who cares

I used to set that image as PC desktop backgrounds back in the day to troll my teachers, when you could use gifs for wallpapers by tiling it.
