Gothic is a better game overall but the controls are unconventional and will take some getting used to. I'd go for Morrowind if you're into hiking simulators and Gothic for the prison colony rape experience.

Game is designed for keyboard controls and if you play with a mouse you have to press keyboard keys for attack directions. I would recommend going full keyboard for the first game but the second game has perfectly working mouse and keyboard controls. You should check out the GOG gothic forums to find unofficial mods and patches for both games. The DX11 renderer for Gothic 2 is fantastic

I would start with 1st since there is lots of recurring characters in 2.

literally never had this problem, the mouse works as good in the first one as in the second. Change the mouse sentensitivity to maximum and you're good to go.
Gothic is really fun, but Morrowind has a better world and setting. Both are great games.

the setting was more interesting in gothic (the backdrop/lore is generic as hell though) since it actually felt like you were in a prison and all the supplies were limited

They're both nice in their own way.
Morrowind has nice worldbuilding, interesting designs and lore.
Gothic has fun gameplay, a handcrafted world and awsome atmosphere.
Gothic also has the objectively best melee skill leveling system. Evolving movesets.
