Heres the thing, any build you min/max is going to have high damage output, thats not what makes magic easy mode. With magic, you are almost never put into a dangerous situation. You can simply lob an endless array of spells at your enemy from a safe distance. You never have to dodge, learn patterns, know when or when not to block, learn a weapon move set. You just move to long range, fire your spells and thats it. Thats why its easy mode.

That depends heavily on how much damage you actually do. Stacking buffs through the roof in Demon's and Dark 1 let you blow up bosses in 1-3 casts, but damage was way too low for 70% of the game in Dark 2 for that to work. 40 INT soul spears were doing less damage than minimum stat greatsword swings, except you only got 2 casts. Using the fire longsword will do more damage more safely than spells you get until like Aldia's Keep. Sorcery is probably the single worst build you can try to play through Dark Souls 2 normally with.
Also in Demon's and Dark 1, the effectiveness of sorcery required a lot of knowledge that a new player simply wouldn't know. Very specific items and where to get them early, and without doing stuff like killing Lautrec for his ring, mages end up very very frail.
Ranged is always easy mode in co-op though, where the bosses attention is normally off the caster. However, you're already playing easy mode by using co-op.

Magic usually works by getting an acceptable level of str/dex to wield a weapon you can use to get you to the point of getting more powerful spells, then it almost entirely abandons it because the magic is so OP. I am pretty sure Dark Souls 1 is the only game with no real world ties, and yet it has a bloodborne reference as well as uses several real world locations as levels in the game, ie some parts of anor londo and the crystal caves for example.

My comments were mostly about pure sorcery. Sorcery itself was always around the level that faith, resonant hexes, and flame swathe were post-nerf. That's why they were nerfed. They never intended any magic to be any good in Dark Souls 2 until the ass-end of the game.
Sorcery's strongest mid-game spells, requiring ~40 INT were only doing ~300 damage, while faith hexes were doing 600+, flame swathe 1000+, and lightning spears 800+ right out of the gate.
How is Sorcery in DaS 3? I heard they might have buffed it in the latest patch.

The same way you deal with any regular-sized enemy in Dark Souls 2. Two hand a greathammer. Hit R2. Horse will hit the ground, then hit R2 again while it's trying to stand up. Done. Switch to two-handing a greatsword for the bosses.

The consensus is that sorcery is pretty weak. I think people probably just haven't figured out how to game the system though. Stacking rings alone can increase specific magic type damage by like 60%, the devs probably intend people to use Steady Chant to get any real damage, and apparently certain staves are better at certain types of magic (sorcery vs dark) without giving any indication of it.
