I'm one of those guys that enjoyed it when everything was more standardized. When everything wasn't on fire for a visual effect and covered in decals.

It wasn't "funny" to see a cardboard cow, it just made it obvious that it was a fabricated war.
And the paper mask only exists because if you looked disguised to your teammates they'd try to kill you instead of actual enemies, like how their playtesters were too dumb to handle both colors being on the same side in MvM.
I enjoy the comics, still. The few times valve does bother with them they're well written.
It's just that the game is utter trash now since it's f2p and kiddos shit everything up. Same for dota.
It's basically the closest we still have to Quake-style deathmatching that still has a sizable amount of players, even if it's Valve's least played multiplayer game at the moment.
