Keep pointing out really

No one wants to insult "the greatest generation" - and everyone deflects the "allies committed warcrimes" issue by saying "nazis were ten times worse" as if thats some kind of justification.

Truth is that every side did something awful. We should understand and note that awful shit happened, not ignore it. not celebrate it.

War isn't something to celebrate - its something to be studied in all its awful detail so it stops happening.

The Wermacht were worth sympathizing. Do you sympathize with them, or the Nazis, because it looked like a more moderate Adolf Hitler could've gotten away with some extra land if he'd stayed away from Poland. I don't think the allies would've engaged first considering how war weary they still were.

>>333824460
You cant sympathize with Nazis. The problem is, you cannot make a disntinction between the two, or the majority of people won't allow you to do that. You can't say "I sympathize with the wehrmacht because just soldiers fighting for their country" - modern historians will tell you that you had to be inline with the nazi ideal in order to be a soldier of germany, and most (if not all, these historians say) were more then happy to rape, pillage, and do awful things to anyone who wasn't german

Is that actually true? I don't know. I remember how much of a blasting Generation War got for trying to say specifically that being a soldier didn't mean being a nazi, and that the people of germany were just as much victims of the nazi regime as anyone else.

Interestingly, everyone was completely behind Hitler in 36 - the rest of the world, save France, was really proud of how well he had managed to salvage Germany in wake of the treaty, france being absolute assholes about the treaty, and the great depression almost killing germany for good. But things didn't turn out well.

>>333824620
Its an interesting point of view to say that roughly 1200 dead servicemen is worth the lives 200,000 civilians.

Also, its quite possible that FDR let the attack happen...

>france being absolute assholes
>gas shit get treatied

Thats one way of seeing it.

>British officials at the conference declared French policy to be "greedy" and "vindictive," with Ramsay MacDonald later announcing, after Hitler's re-militarisation of the Rhineland in 1936, that he was "pleased" that the treaty was "vanishing", expressing his hope that the French had been taught a "severe lesson". [87] In 1938, Lloyd George published a massive two-volume memoir titled The Truth About the Peace Treaties, in which he effectively repudiated the terms of the treaty that bore his signature.

>A discontent bloc of 12–18 "Irreconcilables", mostly Republicans but also representatives of the Irish and German Democrats, fiercely opposed the treaty. One block of Democrats strongly supported the Versailles Treaty, even with reservations added by Lodge. A second group of Democrats supported the treaty but followed Wilson in opposing any amendments or reservations. The largest bloc, led by Senator Lodge,[93] comprised a majority of the Republicans. They wanted a treaty with reservations, especially on Article 10, which involved the power of the League of Nations to make war without a vote by the US Congress.[94] All of the Irreconcilables were bitter enemies of President Wilson, and he launched a nationwide speaking tour in the summer of 1919 to refute them. However, Wilson collapsed midway with a serious stroke that effectively ruined his leadership skills.

>Through much of the 1920s, France was the most vigorous of the wartime Allies in seeking to enforce the treaty's harsher terms, especially with regard to reparations. Without strong British support, however, she was largely unsuccessful. French Marshal Ferdinand Foch—who felt the restrictions on Germany were too lenient—prophetically predicted that "this (treaty) is not peace. It is an Armistice for twenty years."

>but considering their behavior during the previous war?

>It is a cowardly form of warfare which does not commend itself to me or other English soldiers ... We cannot win this war unless we kill or incapacitate more of our enemies than they do of us, and if this can only be done by our copying the enemy in his choice of weapons, we must not refuse to do so.

Also, don't fall into the trap of thinking that Germany was the only bad guys.

The truth about WW1 is that every soldier was a victim of his own country. The real villains were those in charge, especially the Generals who sat eating restaurant meals drinking fine imported tea, while their men starved to death or died in pointless charges

The war was already a meatgrinder by that point. The use of things like chemical weapons and flamethrowers was experiments in weapons technology to maximize enemy casualties while minimizing germanys. I won't condone what they did, but it was clear that other nations picked up the ideas and used them as well.

However, the majority of the war was machineguns, barbed wire, and mud. Soldiers had no food, no water, sometimes no ammunition, and were given orders to rush machine guns with bayonets, while taking fire from their own artillery. There is a vignette from one of the battles of Ypres or Verdun, where wounded soldiers, incapable of moving, were left in arty craters for cover, medics couldnt get to them (or they were forgotten about), and they drowned in the rain.
