Fun community that focused on completing objectives. People would do fun combo rushes or just dick around. Each class was evenly balanced and your teams success was sometimes based on how balanced your team was.

still fun but people stopped focusing on the objective. Medic update made people achievement grind and dedicated achievement servers started popping up.
>drops get announced
Dedicated idle servers pop up and trade servers pop up. People play the objective but 24/7 2fort servers encourage deathmatch style play. Art style is started to get fucked, the updates are still somewhat balanced but people start flooding with classes related to the updates. Team balance is less and less important but payload was fucking awesome.
>mannconomy and beyond
A hellscape of my little pony and furry based servers start popping up. Noobs flood the game in droves because of free to play. Hats/cosmetics are the most important thing in the game now, with the average tf2 player shilling out 20-40 dollars on crates alone to look cool. Everybody only cares about their strange weapons or increasing their own stats, teamwork is out the window. The balance is totally fucked and promotional weapons totally destroy the "hard counter/soft counter" system, making every item a hard/soft counter to another class. New Maps/game modes are boring as all hell and all updates are purely cosmetic. Seasonal updates totally destroy the remaining character of the games original art style. All the new maps have some sort of gimmick to them. The hatconomy and game economy have surpassed gameplay in terms of relevance.
I'm glad I got out when I did. The community is cancerous and just plain awful now
