I never knew anyone who had a Dreamcast.

Did you own one?

If you did, do you have fond memories of it?
>>
I had friends that did. I only really remember sonic, seaman, and maybe a Pokemon game
>>
Nope. I owned a sega saturn.

Fuck me.
>>
>>333803046
>pokemon
>dreamcast

???

>>333803154

I regret not owning a saturn in hind sight.

That's such a personal console experience, because not many people actually had one.
>>
>>333802510

My friend had one. He didn't have a proper 6th gen console, but he got me into Sonic, and he had a book of burned CDs for it. Shit was awesome.

by far the weirdest memory card of all time

>tfw i thought it was a mini sega gameboy as a kid
>>
My cousin had one but no VMU
To beat Sonic Adventure I had to beat most of the game with Sonic several times to unlock the other characters, I never unlocked the last story but did beat every other character's story
>>
>>333802510
Shenmue was GOAT
>>
>>333803532
I didn't even have a dreamcast, but my friend would let me take care of his Chao in this thing. Pretty good little tamagotchi game that way.
>>
I'm pretty sure the Dreamcast never existed. It's just a false memory implanted in all of our minds.
>>
Yeah I had one.

>PSO V.1 and V.2
>Sonic Adventure 2 Demo
>Sonic Adventure 1
>Chaos on VMU
>Skies of Arcadia
>Power Stone
>Seamen (sp?)
>NFL 2K1 and 2K2

Amazing system. Such great memories. The microphone for talking to Seamen was great. PSO was great too.

Yes. I use the think the massive amounts of frame drops were awesome. I thought it was slow motion and shit in games like MVC2 and powerstone.
>>
Didn't have one when they were new, but I remember seeing ads and games that looked cool in stores. I got one in 2004 and it was fucking fantastic, most games are super cheap and there's a shipload of near-perfect arcade ports.
>>
>>333802510
Never owned one as a kid.
Bought one a year or two ago though. I love how easy it is to pirate games.
>>
>>333802510
Not at the time but I've got one now. It's real nice.
>>
Jet Grind Radio and Crazy Taxi was the shit
>>
>>333802510
Yes I had one, got it right after I had a 64.

It was fucking amazing to me. Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue, even the 2k sports titles were fun as fuck (I hate sports games, haven't played any since). The system was full of unique games, and arcade perfect ports.

The VMU was hella cool. Not only did you store info, but while plugged in it would show different things on the screen. But also you could take it with you, use it as a clock, but also could have little mini games on it.

>>333803587
Are you me? I didn't have a memory card at first, so every time I played Sonic Adventure I always had to try and get as far as possible in 1 sitting. Normally I would unlock Knuckles or Amy, but it was awesome getting e102. Also no cutscene skipping in the DC version meant I become VERY familiar with the game line, that I remember to this date.

>>333803627
Absolutely GOAT. Same with the sequel. I'll stay questionable on the third till I see real gameplay, till then I pretend it doesn't exist.

A single game that you associate with the system harder than any other.

your right on that, a TON of its games are hard to get because $$$

but it only makes sense why people didn't grab a saturn, they were let down before, why keep trying? most of my harder core sega friends didn't even have a saturn and anyone that did had the basics for it, mostly sega 1st party.

i only had ONE friend who had a lot of the shmps, fighters and other shit like guardian heroes. he sadly no longer has any of it which is kinda depressing.

but, back to the OP post
>>333802510

i had a dreamcast, got it xmas 1999. a nice little system that could power arcade perfect ports of soul calibur, MvC 1 and 2 and a lot of other great shit like dynamite cop, zombie revenge and typing of the dead.

its really too bad too, i'm, sure if sega wasn't in such dire straights at that point, it would have lasted longer. i really wish we could have seen that castlevania dreamcast game...

You could emulate Pokemon on DC if you wanted to.

Although back when I was doing this I only really emulated NES and SNES and SNES ran poorly.

I never had one until years after it discontinued, but a friend of mine did. That was the first time I ever played Marvel vs Capcom 2, and we had hours of fun playing that. Every once in a while we played Crazy Taxi, but it was mostly just MvC 2.

I remember really wanting to play Seaman for some reason, I think mostly just because of how unique it seemed.

I found mine through a family friend and bought it off them for 25 bucks. They lost the power cable so had to buy that myself.

I already burned and played Crazy Taxi, Sonic Adventure, Power Stone 1 & 2, Spider-Man, and right now I'm on Evolution Worlds Taking a hiatus from Dreamcast right now to play DaS3 when it comes out. I played Evolution Worlds on GameCube a long time ago and I loved it. Most favorite hidden gem of an RPG, so playing it again on its original console feels great.

Don't play the Xbox version it's inferior in many ways. The fights have a heavy amount of motion blur and your moves are weaker on Xbox.
>>
>>333806041
SHENMUE ISN'T EVEN REMOTELY THE FUCKING SAME TO YAKUZA. SHENMUE 2 AKA THE BULK OF THE SERIES DOES NOT EVEN TAKE PLACE IN JAPAN YOU DENSE MOTHERFUCKER. I BEAT THESE GAMES THE FIRST TIME TWO YEARS AGO.

The Xbox version is notorious for being literally based on a prototype version's code with many inconsistencies and technical issues surrounding it. Similar to how the Silent Hill HD collection was. I would know because I worked on it.
>>
>>333806471
xb version is a shoddy port

playing that and then the DC version is a difference to be sure.

i just hope we get SM1 and 2 for pre ordering SM3. i just want them able to be played without having to use older hardware and more accessible to people nowadays.

this post is misleading >>333806824 the Shenmue 2 xbox port is nowhere near as bad as SH HD. It's a fine port, it's just got some minor differences/downgrades.
>>
>>333802510
I had one, it unfortunately broke like 5 years ago and then the replacement a year or two later.
>>
>>333806337
>that soul calibur mini-game that took up half of the fucking memory card
>fucking Power stone 2 item book that took up 65% of the memory card

one weird aspect of the VMUs is that out of the box they were limited to "200 blocks" of storage. With a homebrew utility designed for cheats, bypassing region lock, and other things, you can unlock an additional 44 blocks on a VMU giving it 244. Why these 44 blocks were locked away, who knows. I suspect SEGA had reserved them for future VMU updates that never came.
>>
>>333806392
Played both Shenmues + Yakuza 1-5, they ain't identical. Only comparison = Japanese guy fights people and mini games.

>>333807001
Competent port but if you're playing on OG Xbox instead of 360 the motion blur is worse than you expect. We talking Call of Duty scripted event when you get hurt bad. Or drunkness in GTA 4. It's very heavy.

>>333807539
Shenmue and Yakuza are both about a Japanese guy who runs around in a city following a story with a lot of writing and cutscenes. You do QTEs sometimes but the primary form of gameplay involves running around and interacting with people, and beating people up in 3D beat em up gameplay. When you aren't doing that, there are some minigame diversions. There is a day/night cycle, and if you consider Yakuza 0, they both take place in the 80s.

>>
>>333802510
The big thing was textures IMO. The N64 was undisputedly the hot shit back then, but when the DC came out the textures mopped the floor all over it, with more polygons to boot.

Like, today it's easy to look back on Sonic Adventure as a shit game, but in 99/2000 it was fucking amazing to see a console doing this shit.

Ps2 is the better console yes for it's bigger library, controller suited to more genres of games and better hardware. But arguing over which is better is for autistic manchildren.

God forbid somebody would like both.

Look up tile rendering, it's not as simple as looking at the numbers.

The Dreamcast could do things that would be very difficult on the PS2, even if we don't talk about how little vram the ps2 had.
