Tutu because I like the games being kept separate.
So I'm playing 1 and have just reached Baldur's Gate, but I'm not really feeling it. The story isn't compelling and the companions have zero character.
Are those two points improved upon in 2? Should I power through 1 to get to 2, or even abandon 1 and skip to 2? Or should I just not bother with either at the point?

Companions are fleshed out way more in BG2. You should've gotten the NPC mod for BG1 to give them some character. BG1 is basically just a tabletop campaign in video game form. Still worth playing and you should power through since there's not much left.

If you're playing vanilla then you're going to need to install a bunch of patches and mods to fix all the bugs. If you get the EEs you only need to install and play, and perhaps add some mods that restores cut content. Installing them is generally really easy.
Start with BG and work yourself upwards. NWN focuses more on a multiplayer experience, and the quality of the editor and modules compared to vanilla OC reflects this.
NWN2 has the best campaign of any D&D game, which is Mask of the Betrayer, so save that for last.

Beyond that new plot point though, the IWD games use the same engine but tend to be much more combat focused. If you liked PoE, you will like IWD since its main designer was Josh "le balance man" Sawyer.

It's kinda buggy without the latest patches, not balanced at all and unfinished.
Despite that it has a very interesting and unique setting, engaging gameplay and great characters.
It shows up in plenty of top 10 charts even today for good reasons.
