They are honestly both hard to compare to the other. Ostrava's motivation was to find his kingdom and try to understand what went wrong, only to find out that his own father interfaced with the divine being that caused all of this shit to happen in the first place. Solaire is pursuing his own sun, and for all the speculation we can infer from it, he only loses his mind when he believes he's "found it" in the form of that sunlight maggot that blinded him and made him think he truly found what he'd been looking for. Otherwise, he fights all the way into the Kiln and battles Gwyn, linking the fire in his own world and timeline, and extending the age of fire.
I'd say that Ostrava's end was far more tragic, but I prefer Solaire's overall presence in the world. Ostrava feels like a major character in the world. Solaire feels like an eccentric adventurer.
Solaire helped you, Ostrava needed to be carried.

he's definitely more fleshed out than solaire though. you know seigmeyer's motivation (going out to have a grand adventure), get a sense of his personality (bumbling but well meaning dummy), and you meet him in several places that actually involve you helping him/interacting with him in a way that's a little more than the typical "talk to guy three times and then he's gone". Not that having to give him an item or kill an enemy for him is really that deep, but its more than we get from basically anyone else. you also learn a little more about his background later on (like that he has a daughter out searching for him) and ultimately get to decide what kind of tragic fate he gets: do you let him die a hero, or go on living til he goes hollow and needs to be put down by his own daughter?

I thought the one on the Right was from DSII because i didn't recognize him and i've only tag teamed a bit of Demon's souls on my m8's PS3, so i didn't know most the characters.
Not because i hadn't played DS2, but because on release there was a massive bug that cause all of the npcs you meet throughout DS2 to not show up properly, or only show up once. Meaning the multi-stage questlines in DS2 never occurred on lots of people's playthroughs because they went the "wrong" way first.

The entire age is about a grayscaled world. There's no inherently good or bad. Everything contains both sides. Would you consider the age of light perfectly good? That's why the age of gray was the time of "peace". It was a balance. That balance was tipped over and the world fucked up. The age of dark is the way of the pendulum to swing back.
Gray is boring and meaningless, and it's void of motion and eventfulness, both in a good and a bad way. The age of light isn't good, and neither is the age of dark.
