Yeah, while amiibos were hard to find over here when they first came it was way worse in the US. They had port strikes blocking the flow of stuff coming into the country and stores were(and honestly probably still are) under ordering and underestimating demand. That made Amiibos rare and prone to Speculation. As the port strike finished and supplies increased the situation didn't get better, more and more speculators started snapping them up stopping the supply problem from improving, fuelling further speculation and attracting more speculation.
And yeah they have store exclusives, we did too actually but they were mostly variants so not many noticed or cared. Store exclusives are super common things when it comes to toys and collectibles.

I have a Megaman amiibo and I plan on buying a Cloud amiibo whenever that comes out.
Megaman is still in its original packaging on my shelf, mint condition. I just like to look at it, I never had any intention of ever doing retarded "amiibo training" nonsense and I will probably end up selling it years down the road if it goes up into the hundreds. I spent $13 for it and it's already worth $30 right now. Pretty solid investment, I'd say.
