Why the blade on the helmet

Just what is it meant to accomplish
>>
>>333786327
Serious question to start things off.
How do people see the wild card ending as a "good ending" even though the followers of the apocalypse part in the ending clearly says that new vegas fell to anarchy (or freeside i guess) and that they were screwed with so many people injured and such?

It does that for House, too. And mostly because the Follower's endings are meant to illustrate that their good intentions far outweigh their ability to actually help people

The problem with New Vegas is that it has great lore, great build up, great writing, great characters, great dialogue, great everything..

I never understand the Legions backwards thinking...why do they hate technology and think it'so unrelieable?
Do they honestly believe spears and machetes can compete with Power armor, Mini-guns, Robots, Plasma and laser weaponry? It'd be amazing if the Legion adapted and something like 'Son of Ceaser' was created and it's an elite Centurion devision that wore custom made Legion Power armor, wielded big ass phalanx square shields and electrified long rippers.

>>
>>333787564
The Legion only eschews technology that takes away the need for human or makes them "weak". Chems and robots are bad. Weapons and radios are not.

If you hand over Cass to the Van Graffs, you find out the Legion is trying to buy energy weapons from them. Which makes sense, a gun is a gun. It needs someone skilled enough to use it to be any good, no matter what high tech nonsense it shoots.

Friendly reminder that Obsidian will never produce another Fallout game because they failed to meet Bethesda's standards, which Bethesda later failed to meet themselves
>>
>>333787564
Caeser forces them to stay away from tech to increase the individual's need of the group. His reasoning is that the NCR soldiers personally have advanced gear, and they're all self-serving and backstabbing. Remove the fancy tech, train the man, and you'll have more loyal soldiers.
Which for the most part works, especially when coupled with extremely harsh punishments for transgressions
>>
>>333787917
Nobody said the Legion was smart. It falls apart once Caesar is dead because they're just raiders in fancier outfits.
>>
>>333788013
The New Vegas team, by and large, doesn't work for Obsidian any more so it's no big loss
>>
>>333787981
>after all these years I haven't played Lonesome Road

play it, Ulysses is either batshit insane or a voice of reason depending on who you roleplay and I think that's great.

I maintain that Lanius is the hypest character in any game (followed by Artorias from DaS).
Everyone's shit scared of the legion and the horrible shit they do, which apparently pales in comparison to the monster called Lanius. Single handedly killing platoons of Praetorians, slaughtering the men of his tribe when they didn't fight well enough, performing the rite of decimatio, and is considered the legion's trump card. Then when you actually meet him he has terrifying lines like this, he's taller than everyone else in the game, and he's got that sweet as fuck armour.
10/10 presentation, pity about the gameplay
>>
>>333788050
But doeant Caesar see that he's crippling his own forces? 100 legionaries rushing tiwards a minigun firing will only get 100 legionaires dead. Just imagine the shit they could accomplish if the Legion actually expands technology use like Stealth Boys, Power Armor and Even maybe Vertibirds.

Don't forget that Caesar was an NCR citizen, who had his family killed and ended up with the Followers. He never had much firsthand experience with tech that impressive. He does know that the NCR and Followers alike are dependent on old world USA values and supplies. He wants a society removed from both of those. Once NV rolls around, the Legion is well established and strong, and he still wants to push it's development further. We can assume the Midwestern BoS doesn't want to tangle with them, for whatever reason.

Love these threads. I'm going to start a new playthrough and this time I want to feel like a true freeside hobo struggling to survive. I'm tired of being an unstoppable wasteland jesus by level 10. So I want a few mods that make every aspect of the game harder, not just the combat, but also the economy, the decisions and role playing, a harsher hardcore mode, much less loot, I want it to be rare to find the occasional pork n beans to satisfy my crippling hunger and for chet to give my the middle finger when begging for some food, etc. I was thinking on getting Jsawyer, Cirosans Classic Overhaul, Vicious Wastes, and I was looking at a mod called true wasteland economy the other day. You guys know of any other mods that make the game harder? Is true wasteland economy compatible with the other mods I mentioned?

i didnt like his voice and his personality, for me it didn't fit him

he was supposed to be a tribal violent maniac who's heart and soul is strictly by caesar but he doesn't sound and speak like that

caesar was scarier than him, although that was when my character was a lot more weaker and less confident to take on two armies at once.

>"I was just fucking with you.."
>>
>>333788426
Thing is, Caesar can absorb those losses in a way NCR can't

Really, all he needs is to change up tactics a bit to compensate for no longer fighting random tribals and a weapon manufacturing base like NCR has with the Gun Runners.

Comparing the basic troops of each, they do. Guns, stimpaks, specially manufactured clothes. If we factor in the stuff they have access too it's an even bigger difference, like autodocs, chems, turrets, trains, etc.
Caesar views it as a crutch, despite how powerful these tools can be.

Takibg a scenario from Fallout 4 what happens when the Legion encounters an advanced faction like the Institute? The Brotherhood was smart and set up jammers to stop them from teleporting an army into the airport and slaughtering them all...how would the Legion be able to counter that? They'd probably think it's unholy Pluto magic and never set foot on the east ever again.

it's a problem with all the gamebryo games. And a lot of games in general, really. Everything just feels so small. Both the world because they can't just make a thousand mile wasteland, and the events because they can only have so many characters loaded in at a time. I remember near the end of Oblivion Martin does a big epic battle speech like Aragorn before the climax of return of the king, and it's just like you, him, jauffre, and like ten other guys versus a dozen or so demons.

Followers know about tech. They're not BoS levels of advanced, but they're a smart group. One of them helped reprogram Yes Man.
They just focus more on medicine and history than weapons, so it's less practical in game.

>>333788426
His tactics are great against tribals and for enforcing his laws, and the conflict against NCR is the first time they've had any trouble. After using their zerg tactics against NCR in the first Hoover Dam battle and losing, they've changed their tactics. Now they make better use of terrain, guerilla tactics, and sabotage. They only fight head on when they've got terrain advantage, like in the Dam interior where NCR's range is useless
>>
>>333789379
Every anti-Legion quest you do (Like stopping the bombing of the monorail and disrupting the gas attack plans) results in him commenting on how his specific plan in each area was foiled "mysteriously". Unfortunately I don't think he has anything to say if you nuke his home territory.
>>
>>333789379
How was the Institute Scourged? Their main vector is to help Humanity. They got specialized synth's that can absorb and filter Radiation.
>>333789204
I don't think even Caesar would have the brains to counter something like Institute teleportation. If anything he'd keep sending freah grunts into a ceaseless meat grinder.
>>

>>
>>333787564

In reality, the NCR-Legion war is a massive contrivance. Only extreme incompetency on the hand of the NCR could lead to a legion victory.

NCR has EVERY advantage. I guess Oliver is just that fucking stupid
>>
>>333789884
Well he IS deliberately fucking around in order to make the battle big and bloody so he can get tons of medals for winning. I think every officer in the NCR hates his guts.
>>
>>333789057
They'd never win head on, but if the Railroad can get a spy in, the Legion will be able too as well. They're also not above using old world tech for specific uses, like with the radiation bomb, or Ulysses nuking NCR.
Teleportation is incredibly OP though, so if the Institute knew the Legion were coming they'd be fucked of they could find them. Flood the area with guerilla fighters, don't set up any command tents, carry magnets to ID synths.
It would be more a war of attrition and spying than anything else.
>>
>>333789884
>I guess Oliver is just that fucking stupid
Well his plan is literally "throw troopers at it until we win because FUCK the Rangers"

He's salty because the credit for the first win was attributed to the Rangers and he's deliberately throwing away their help out of spite
>>
>>333789884

>>
>>333789720
Yeah, to be clearer, they know stimpaks and computer terminals, not power armor and energy weaponry. They didn't do anything to affect Yes Mans combat capability or anything. I'm sure they know of these technologies, but nothing in depth. All of that would've been snatched up by the BoS or Enclave. Caesars intelligent but he can't prepare for the unfamiliar. He's been away from the West for what, 30 plus years? The Legion did capture some Midwestern Scribes though
>>
>>333790050
I'd assume the Legion would learn from their mistakes after the first command base was butchered by Synth armies. Focusing on nothing but sabotoge, spying and information gathering. But the Institute is 10× better at that because they can make agents that nobody can tell apart. They snatch people and replace with a synth plant.

NCR is just incompetent. A rational NCR general would just sort this shit out, reinforce the dam, and then prepare logistics/Mortars for an NCR assault.

NCR takes the battle 10 out of 10 times if they're well-led. A well entrenched force can take on an army 3 times their size ( That's given equal Force concentration, an NCR squad can pour out way more firepower than a legion squad) Legion can't stop long range harrying by NCR artillery.

GG legion

They do use guns, just not in the common rank and file. Haven't you ever dealt with Legionary Assassins?

Their limited use of them also makes their logistics much simpler and lightweight. There's a reason NCR characters constantly complain about lack of resources and Legion characters do not.
>>
>>333787564
they use guns. but it would make more sense for them to carry shields when using melee weapons. it's stupid how it wasn't in the game.
>>
>>333791315

I interpret that line as a veiled threat. You rose from the grave and walked half the Mojave to get that chip back from Benny. You're telling Caesar that you won't hesitate to take it from his corpse (and, remember, you've pretty much done the impossible before). But at the same time, if Caesar hands it over, there's no problem; you're not here to start trouble if Caesar doesn't make trouble.

>Originally it was planned that Mr House could be seduced (presumably only by female characters). If successful in some sort of speech challenge, the player would be told to enter the secret area of his penthouse and enter some kind of "scanner" (to perve over the player's body - or more likely according to Raul - brain?). It's not clear what would happen next, but presumably the idea would be that it would let the player enter his secret area (fnar!) without setting off the alarm like usual. This is detailed in Mr House's dialogue script:

>int seduction ;1 = House has expressed interest, 2 = invited to secret area, 3 = has been scanned

>There are also blank placeholder dialogues for this scene, but they contain no actual dialogue ("Scannerafter", "Scannerbefore"). This likely ties in with Raul's dialogue if you ask him about Mr House. He says House used to "scan women's brains" and "make them dress up in different clothes" in lieu of actual err, sexual acts - this is probably exactly what would have happened in this sequence.

They're the top few feet of a telegraph pole, they look a little too complex to just throw together on the spot

Shields are pointless if most of your enemies don't fight back with melee weapons or low-velocity projectiles like spears and arrows. They're just clunky and won't perform well in the type of ambush and retreat tactics that Legionares do with their melee weapons.

Historically, most soldiers who were given shields mostly fought in tight-rank formation and relied on acting collectively in their actions in formation for their strength (such as with hoplites and Republic and early Empire legionaires). Guys who were either skirmishers or linebreakers / knights, whose role were more of fucking shit up on an individual-level-focus, were often not given shield, or given smaller ones.

Not to mention ballistic resistant shields are pretty retarded. Riot shields, at best, can help stop small calibers and shrapnel, but are mostly used in mind to block thrown objects and thrashes from protesters. IIRC, most of them, and ballistic plates for vest-carriers, are super-heavy unless they're ceramic (which can only take a single-to-a-few shots before breaking).

Well, you can't really show dialogue screens in a trailer effectively, but you can imply roleplaying potential via voiceovers, a variety of NPC and landscape design, etc. All the trailer shows off is bleak, Lonesome Road-style landscapes, military vehicles, and military peeps shooting.

It's more about what's implied than what's concretely shown on screen. I understand that's not the most helpful description, but that's all I've got right now. I'm talking about the kind of thing that separates Fallout NV from Fallout 3.

Now, maybe I'm wrong and they just didn't know how to show that kind of thing in the trailer. But if so, hopefully I'll hear about it when it's out. Until then, I'm not feeling the hype.

The north edge of Fallout 2's map spilled over the southern border of Oregon, and IIRC, the settlement there (Arroyo) is explicitly mentioned in New Vegas as being part of NCR.

Oregon could very well be "frontier" territory for NCR, but it would require that they hadn't expanded any further north in the forty-ish years between 2 and NV.

There is no concrete lore about the Legion's territory apart from one or two places. That map is based on Van Buren, which is not canon.
Admittedly it's pretty far away from Vegas to be heavy legion territory, but it wouldn't be crazy for a Legate and some men to be sent up there, especially if there's a good reason (like important rare resources, a war winning super weapon, etc)

I like him, but I couldn't let a loose end like him go. He's the only other one that knows about Yes Man, except Julie Farkas.

Julie doesn't know about Yes Man.

Console commands are so fun.

Legate Lanius is a beast. Every single NCR outpost I've summoned him in was defeated. He truly is a monster of the East. Hell, only 20 NCR veterans are able to kill him.

Any console command stories? Cool things to do with console commands? Setscale shenanigans?
