Gen 2 synths are for menial labour.

Homemaker Mod already does most of what Wasteland Workshop does but adds even more crafting options so you're probably right.

the institute is just poorly written
If I had written this game's plot the main character would have been a synth and all their memories of a wife and kid were planted to manipulate them into destroying the institute's enemies.
You find out that your a synth at some point in the main quest and your choice of faction actually has meaning. Free your synth bros by siding with the railroad, do the institute's bidding and help them take shit over, or join the brotherhood to get revenge.
I would have preferred this over what we got.
