What is the best mainline SMT game?
What is the best spinoff (excluding Persona games)?
Nocturne
Spinoffs? I'm fond of DDS, Raidou 2, and Soul Hackers
Nocturne.
Soul Hackers, or Devil Summoner in general really.
Also why excluding Persona?
Nocturne for mainline, with SJ in second place.
DDS1/2 for spinoffs
Strange Journey, Raidou Kuzunoha.
Fuck Persona
I hate how the mainline series is in living in the shadows of Persona
>>333764079
I hate how everyone thinks the Persona games are SMT and not just another Megaten series just like SMT, Devil Summoner or DDS. Thanks Atlus USA.
>>333764073
Are they mimeing but secz?
Strange Journey's best mainline
Digital Devil Saga 1 is best spinoff, even including Persona
>>333763095
Nocturne.
Digital Devil Saga since it complements Nocturne nicely and also dat secret boss.
>>333764762
Satan , Demi Fiend
Whoooo
Playing SJ and it's awesome
It's quite simple
Persona = Waifu simulator
Thats why it's "better"
Fucking bullshit
SJ and IV are both great, but there will never be another SMT with graphics and atmosphere like Nocturne
DDS is cool although the story was pants on head retarded, not that it's very important
>>333765380
Kinda sad most people don't seem to know anything about Persona 1 and 2. But yeah, they're basically nothing but waifu/social sims now.
>>333765478
DDS story was good
it got really bizarre near the end when both were combined together or something
>>333763902
>Also why excluding Persona?
Probably because it's really popular and he doesn't want it to become a "your favorite Persona" thread.
>>333764285
I wonder why they did that. It's not like SMT was any sort of popular in America at the time, right?
>>333763095
>What is the best mainline SMT game?
IV, demon fusion reached its peak with it, not to mention the glorious OST.
>What is the best spinoff
Raidou 2 and DDS2
>>333766706
>"your favorite Persona" thread.
Persona is easily the worst Megaten series right now though.

>When Atlus localized its first mainline Shin Megami Tensei game, Nocturne, in 2004, the company made the decision to add the name Shin Megami Tensei to every title, even spinoffs like Persona. "That was pretty much a marketing strategy decision that the company made," says lead editor Yu Namba. The games aren't so different; using similar universes plagued with demons, so Atlus decided to keep all the names under one umbrella to form a brand for English-speaking audiences.
>>333766959
Yeah, I know why they did it, I'm just saying it seems weird because it's not like SMT or Persona were really popular back then, but I guess they were looking ahead, so it's not such a bad strategy, there's probably plenty of people who've gotten into SMT because of Persona; I know I... probably will. I decided to play Persona to see what all the hype was about and decided to jump into SMT later as well, though I'm trying to finish the main four Personas first. Not sure I will though, I don't like the direction the series has taken starting with 3.
>if... still isn't translated
>>333767295
I hope they bring back demon negotiation in Persona 5.
>>333767681
>Devil Summoner PSP still isn't translated
>new Devil Summoner game never
>>333765712
Were Persona 1 or 2 released on the US?
>>333767976
Oh yeah, I'm glad to see that demons as well as the melee/ranged weapon system in coming back.
>>333768174
Both the PSX and PSP versions of the first were, tough the localization of the PSX versions was terrible. The PSP version of Innocent Sin was released in English, and so was the PSX version of Eternal Punishment.
>>333768174
Google it, cretin
>>333768174
Yes. Innocent Sin wasn't released on the US until the PSP remake, and they never released the PSP remake of Eternal Punishment.

I feel like Nocturne has the worst beginning of the mainline games, but it really picks up speed quickly.

Poor SMT fans, can't have a thread last long unless people start arguing about Persona.

>What is the best mainline SMT game?
Strange Journey
>What is the best spinoff (excluding Persona games)?
Strange Journey
>>333770418
It's kinda hard to have lively discussion when most people can agree that most, if not all SMT games are pretty decent
>>333770760
Yeah, I see the same problem in Ratchet and Clank and Dragon Quest threads. Then you have Final Fantasy and Persona threads and the like where everyone hates every game that's not their favorite and they all argue over it.
Starting a NG+ in DeSu:OC, shoud I name the MCAbelorAbe?
>>333763095
That image never fails to bait me.
best mainline: Strange Journey or SMT II
best spinoff: Soul Hackers

IV Final redeemed Atlus for me after the blunder that was #FE
>those last two boss fights
Literally every Chaosfags dream.
SJ is what I'd say the best mainline game would be if we were counting story and atmosphere. Mechanic wise, I think 4 is pretty nice since it simplifies fusions quite a bit so I don't wind up fucking around in the Cathedral of Shadows forever.
>>333765712
Persona 1 was pretty awesome, even though I didn't care for the future installments at all.
IV, as for Persona I didn't care for 3 or 4 and haven't played 1 and 2 yet. SJ second best mainline. If IV actually had good dungeons like SJ did it'd be my GOTYAY.
