I'm legit curious, they run anywhere from $450-$2000.

They should make a live streaming service that hooks your toaster up to a feed of high end computers playing new games which you control via the internet. Don't know how they would deal with input lag though.

The point was to make Steam and consequently PC gaming more palatable to casuals.

Then they realized that casuals don't care unless you market your product to hell and back.

How does steam link handle resolution changes? I run 1440p on my PC but my TV is 1080p, it's a pain to have to enable my TV as a monitor, clone my desktop to it and change my resolution every time I want to start or stop playing something on my TV.

I think Steam Controller is pretty neat
eventho I still prefer my old Xbox's pad.

I bought a 700 doller alienware one from gamestop. My biggest issue with it was thr controllers are shit. I switched to xboxone controllers then i switched to just using my pc again. Its been sitting in my cupboard for about a uear untouched. Pc is in everyway better. Oh also maybe it eould of been better if they made it so i could play local coop on more games that you can play local coop on the console version of aka l4d2. I would still use it if that was the case i would play modded l4d2 locally with my friends.

Which is funny, since Steam itself is console gaming for people with PC hardware.
>>
>>333762894

Next console generation will essentially be Steam machines.

Calling it now.
>>
I wouldn't group the Steam Link with Steam Machines.

I don't have one, but it seems like it could be a useful device for some people. Sure you could get a 10 gorillion meter long HDMI cable but the Steam Link is a more intuitive solution to using your PC in the living room.

>>333762894
I still don't think steammachines are a bad idea. Lots of people who are interested in getting into PC gaming, would just prefer to have something simple like a console (at least to get into). The problem I think is the price. You have ones like alineware that try and have a small profile one, but at the cost of no upgrades and being really weak is pretty dumb (seriously the Xbone is fucking 50-75% of a huge PC tower, console users aren't going to care that much). And then all the other ones are like over 1k. It's just too fucking confusing for a consumer, unlike a PS4 or Xbone where you can just buy the 1 model and be good.

>>333763123
This. Too many models and companies. I kept thinking one company would come out are really just hit it out of the park.
>Heres a 400 / 700 / 1k models that are fully upgradable
Something simple like that, a low, medium, and high model all of which really have a difference in power. Like the alienware ones are so dumb, the only difference is higher ram (cheap as fuck), and normally the CPU. And you basically can't upgrade them to any meaningful extent.

So I feel maybe it could still be a thing, especially if PS4.5 ends up being a thing, PC users would use that as an example of why you might as well be using a PC at this point. Hell if nobody else nails it, I honestly think Microsoft will try and probably succeed. They are already linking Xbone and Windows8 to being the same platform.
>>
>>333766829
I'm happy with it. I dig that it's portable and so far I haven't run into a game it wouldn't run. There was a time that if you kept your eye on slickdeals you could get a base model for 400 pretty regularly. That was when it came with Windows and an Xbox controller. I would buy it again.
>>
>>333767126
I'm not sure but I'd be surprised if there wasn't some kind of device that does basically everything the Steam Link does but is cheaper.
>>
>>333767189

I appreciate the push they did to bring gaming to Linux so PC gaming could be uncoupled with Windows/Microsoft, and in that regards they were about as successful as they could have been, but it was still pretty disappointing. Lotsa indies but still very little support from major players. I think Steam surveys only report like 1% of steam users using Linux? And I bet a bunch of those are dualboot or just an alternate PC, like I only use Linux on my mid-range laptop.

Really I think they just should have pushed SteamOS somehow without bothering with Steam machines. Advertise it as a free HTPC, add in all that other stuff like playing movies or whatever, but have people supply their own hardware, maybe partner with companies who already make HTPC's or compact computers and go from their.

Steam and all their F2P cash shop games probably flood them with money so they can take risks but it seems like everything they've done recently was either meh or a huge blunder that could have been prevented with a bit of thinking. Like, instead of paid mods, why not start with a donate button?

SteamOS was Valve's horrified reaction to Windows 8 threatening Steam's marketshare.

Ever since Windows 10 Valve doesn't give a shit about SteamOS anymore because Win10 fixed everything.

So all of this is a failed project. Although it had one of the absolute best intentions and potential i've ever seen.
