So I just started the game (got an early copy), left the tutorial area and arrived on Novalis. How did the mad men from Insomniac do it? How do they make it look this fucking good? Also, I think they nailed the humor. Can't wait for the movie.

If they did a next gen spyro modern graphics it wouldn't have the atmosphere of spyro at all.
A new spyro game should have the graphics of the ps1 games, at a higher resolution with a higher polycount (in some places) and some sharper textures.

I always thought the first game had some dodgy art direction. The cities were great but the plantlife on planets were really oddly off-putting. Like the colours just didn't seem to go together or something. Especially on that factory planet where you first meet the janitor.

Conversely I thought the cities in 2 looks really off but they got the wildlife on planets looking better. That major city with the red, white and black colour scheme was just odd.

They kept their edge up until 3, Ratchet was still the same in Deadlocked, Clank too. You just saw/heard less of Clank. The funny part about the first game was seeing Ratchet and Clank chill their role as things progress. Ratchet was less of a dick and begrudged. Clank relaxed a bit and picked up on some of Ratchet's mannerisms and personality.

The PS3 games were just overall horrible.

I own a PS3 but had only tried the demo for Tools of Destruction. I was a huge fan but I was just disinterested by what I saw. A friend of mine had it and said it was great, trusting his opinion I asked him to lend it to me. It was a joyless shell of a game, with mediocre weapons and forgettable everything else. I guess he liked it because he never played the other games.

It wasn't retconned in Going Commando, it was character progression. Throughout the first game ratchet is at first kind of dismissive (but friendly enough) to Clank, after Qwark betrays then he goes full-on hate mode, and eventually realises what an ass he become and they make up and end the game as friends.

Going Commando just showed that they were still best friends a year later.

Everyone hated Ratchet in the first game specifically the middle third where he is a Grade-A asshole, but that development and overcoming his selfishness is a major part of the story and I'm worried the reboot will suffer for it.

In terms of look and atmosphere Metropolis and Pokitaru were easily the best, but going by actual level design I really liked Novalis and Orxon because they had 3-4 paths that looped back to the beginning. Hoven was also great.

CiT has too many gimmicky weapons like that shitty sphere that was controlled by tilting your controller and many of the weapon evolutions were uninspired, especially the rocket launcher and whatever the name of that ground-sawblade weapon was. Nevermind the fact most weapons were useless 90% of the time (lightning spikes) and at least half of them just didn't work properly on the moons.

I think R&C2's weapon selection is the best one, gunfights never get old with it. Shame the remote controlled spiderbot never made a comeback or got redesigned, that was one of my favorites.

The only two exceptions being Clank Zapper and that abysmal "upgrade" to the lava gun.

Well if you look at the screenshots in the this thread...no it was not worth it.

There is more shit on the screen but the shit only looks slightly better than the Future games. The ONLYYYYYY reason into the Nexus was not 30fps was because of time and money, but most important of all the fucking Cell. Yes Insomniac made a good number of games for the system, but it doesn't make working with the Cell any less tedious. Given how most people do not even know Into the Nexus exists, seems obvious what is going on. But with the move to a more PC like architecture, things are made exponentially easier. But yet they refuse to make it 60fps, I dunno. I blame the consoles overall, but Insomniac are culpable.

I've beat the game (In 5 hours and 20 minutes.) and I'm disappointed as a classic Ratchet and Clank fan.

3 is the wackiest and has the crazy guns and characters. It has online as well. It is lots of fun, but the story becomes tedious. The customization was really cool as well.

1 has the best platforming and the novelty of being an introduction to the world. The crassness of the game is also a great thing.

2 has the most interesting story due to pacing and prose creating a good narrative. Has the right amount of gimmicks without overindulging to the point where the core game starts to take a backseat. It is an adventure that doesn't need to tell you how big the stakes are constantly, nor does it tell you how hard things are. It just kicks your ass and lets gameplay inform the story and narrative. The story is not one of constant MacGuffin chasing that seem to drastically deviate and complicate the plot for confusing reasons.

2 has the original and less absurd weapon upgrades. That is not necessarily better. If one were to pick a game to represent the series it would most likely be 3. This is due to it living up to the "crazy" guns that are less about being absurd in concept and more about absurd in terms of how they upgrade and the damage they deal. The ramped up difficulty near the end is both welcome but transparent. It requires more strategy but still has the player using the same weapons to cheese the difficulty. The game is the easiest to play while showcasing what made the series great front and center. That is a subjective thing when it comes to taste. 3 being a highlight reel or 2 being a singular and focused story with a slow build.

I was shocked when I first played 3. The number of strange and new weapons and the rate at which you acquire them is definitely expedited. This may again being a means to showcase the game to new players and provide more to do earlier.

They aren't doing anything different technically, the textures are low quality, the aliasing is everywhere, no tessellation, it's just the amount of color in the game.

Anyone have that picture of last of us vs a bunch of other post apocalyptic games? Basically it shows how big of an impact color makes on graphics. It shows that the last of us actually has color whilst all other games (gears, fallout, order 1866, etc) are all grey and brown, making everything look washed out and muddy.

I played Thieves in Time.

It wasn't really that great, imo. It felt like an extension of earlier games (a lot of the core stuff was there) but it seemed like they were afraid to take any risks with it. The final boss was really weak and ended on a cliffhanger. It was decent but not nearly as satisfying as the previous games in the series.

The one sentence review is: The game is inconsistent.

It has sections of classic Ratchet and Clank action and platforming that feel great. The weapons are varied and you have quite a few fairly fast, but the game is tiny.

It gives the illusion of lots of planets with lots to do, lots of characters to meet, lots of things to find, but beyond one "optiona"l objective per planet, and the golden bolts to unlock cheats, there is very little to do in each area. The longest I spent on one planet was 35 minutes, where I had to kill hundreds of the same enemy to farm an item to unlock a better wrench (1 of three).

The story skips forward at a bad pace. It skips over any character development with ther different characters. Ratchet and Clank have no reasons to even be friends except that they happened to run into each other. The game is obviously a movie tie in, which is fine, but I can tell entire scenes of character dialogue and plot are just cut. It seems like they just assume you've seen the movie, even though the game is coming out first. It's awkward.

Lots of characters I remember from childhood games return. The Plumber, Skids Mcmarx, Dr. Nefarious, etc. However, they all are in the game for 5 minutes or less. A lot of the games different plots/subplots are kinda crammed into the reboot in one way or the other, which makes sense.

Ratchet and Clank themselves have great models, but a lot of the other characters look awful. It's weird. PS2 era mouth moving dialogue sometimes.

Overall... I liked the game for what it was. The humor is decent and familiar, the voice work is okay, the worlds looks pretty good (even though theres some serious downgrade on the lighting and textures). The guns are good, but their upgrade system is shallow, which sucks.

Ratchet is a jaded prick who wants to be a hero and is a tinkerer. Clank shows up and Ratchet goes to get him. Clank is looking for a hero, specifically Quark. Ratchet says he can help, he can be the hero or at least transportation. Ratchet keeps getting in over his head and his patience with Clank is getting thin. Clank likewise is getting sick of Ratchets pushy demeanor. When they find out Quark has been corrupted and is not really a hero, they decide to be the heroes. They still bicker and laugh at each others expense but they slowly becomes friends, like real people. They don't need a trailer saying "AMAZING FRIENDS". The game shows it.

The Future games are ass in the way the Star Wars prequels are ass. They create context for things that didn't need context. MGS4 is similar in this regard.
There is an integrity of writing by which you create such a concise idea of your world and your story so that people can fill in the blanks with their imagination, which empowers them. While the person consuming the media is doing this, the nature of what they create in their own mind is influenced heavily by the artist, leading them to a conclusion with diverging prose but restrained conceptualization due to the rules and knowledge they posses.

We all know each MGS game was always supposed to be "the last one". Snake Eater would have been a great way to send off the series. This is in part due to the quality of the gameplay and the surface level story and transparent context that creates an experience many people can enjoy regardless of their intelligence or imagination. The end of the game leaves us with Big Boss saluting his mentor, crying. Over this scene is Eva talking about the legacy of The Boss and what her sacrifice was all about. That she killed herself to save the world in the most basic terms. Even in doing that history will never remember her due to the SCENE in which the events unfolded. After sharing the experience with Snake you now understand his decent into evil. Because you were there, the implication is this event pushed him and you infer what happens next. This up until his initial appearance in Metal Gear. He being constantly labeled a villain, but because of the message in MGS3 it creates someone who isn't just a black hat.

There are thing that do not need to be said or explained because they are shown.

It's the best Sly game easily, with one tiny caveat that sucks, but I can't tell you what it is because it's a spoiler.

Certainly nothing that makes the game less than great though. It's really fun and you should play it if you liked the other Sly games at all.
