Smelter demons are weak to blunt damage, like most "armored dudes" in the game. Not sure about the elements.
If your dps is too low, you'll have to prepare to counter the burn damage from his aura. But if you just die to his swings, you have to git gud first.

Weird thing about that dlc is you don't have to fight any boss before fighting Fume Knight. He gives you the crown from that dlc. Smelter is optional and Alonne is available after Fume Knight but also optional. Has a pretty sweet boss weapon though if you like dex builds.

You should kill the blue Smelter at least once. And it's obviously easier on NG. This unlocks his sword at Ornifex, and both Smelter demons actually have the same soul. You don't need to do him again to get a duplicate sword, a normal Smelter's soul will suffice.

In fact, if you explore the entirety of the tower before confronting Fume knight you can find enough wedges for both the arena and almost the avatars you find in your way.
People often run out of wedges because they don't explore the new areas opened by activating the statue elevators before confronting the boss.
Also since you are doing a dex build check out this weapon (murakumo). It's only a B rank but it's my favorite for these builds. Has legit crowd control with it's wide ass swings. Sold by Ornifex.
