Thinking of getting a PS3, had some question before I make my final decision.

Which model should I go for? Read some shitty things about the super slim (noise, performance issues).

How much of a memory muncher is the system? I only buy physical copies of games so I don't think I would need like 500gb no matter how many games I get for it but I can't really measure that myself.

Much appreciated.
>>
Get a cheap used regular slim, it has the best build quality of them all and the potential for softmodding is there. Fatty ps3's are loud poorly constructed timebombs, and the super slim suffers from having a very flimsy piece of thin plastic act as a toploader/noise insulator.
>>
Go regular slim and if you only buy physical then 120GB is way more than enough.

Funny, I bought a used slim and it was just this. Got another used fat and it's the opposite.

I have a super-slim. I got it for £35 on Ebay. I've had it on for 15 hours plus before now, playing Demons Souls, Mass Effect, TLoU etc. and it's never had issues with heat (although I have had it open to replace the thermal paste once).

The one thing I don't like about it is it's a top-loader. The regular slim takes disks in the front meaning you can have it in a low cabinet. Memory requirements aren't too bad; if you have something over 40gb and only use disks you're unlikely to ever fill it unless you use optional data installs.

So, yeah, choice is between a crappy top-load system and paying less, or a front-facing disk-drive and paying a little more.

Do not listen to these guys.
Buy a fat and hardmod it so you can downgrade for CFW, plus PS2 hardware support.

I'm pissed about that, I have a first series 60 gig that was backwards compatible, but got the yellow light of death, and NOONE will touch the damn thing, "its just not cost effective, so we stopped doing it" bitch, I will pay more than a new system just to have mine back, I dont care.

As long as it has some good games it doesn't mean you always have to have the newest thing.
I bought an NES roughly in ~2007 and I had more fun playing those old games than my DS/PC games at the time.

Could you give me a description of how those 320gb are spent? Like it's 20% digital games, 25% something else etc? I would help me understand more about what really eats memory and what is less of a concern.
>>
>>333732178
Slim will do if you care about noise.
Fat if you wanna mod easier and try for PS2 BC.
Though why would you when you could get a fat PS2 and mod the shit out of that?

Storage space depends on what games are you looking to buy. Most games during post-2009 will have install data to reduce load times, half the time it's mandatory. They're usually around 1-5 GBs with MGS4 having the largest install of 20GBs if you don't wanna do partial installs.
Storage can be upgraded, but it's a pain in the ass if you're doing a backup.

Super slim is the best possible option. It's small, it's quiet, it works like the regular slim, and I believe its models have the most hard drive space. The people crying over "le cheap plastic :'^(" are probably fuckheads that drop their consoles or some shit.
>>
>>333733519
I tried this, multiple times.
the bad part is the thermal solders getting cracks in them, they need to be reflowed (for a temp fix) or reballed (for a permanent fix) no one will do either because it takes 2 hours for the easy one, twice that for the hard one, and the cost per hour of work is more than a brand new ps3, so they just wont do it.
>>

>>
>>333734623
It's objectively louder than the rest because of the thin toploader, and is impossible to softmod from the get go. No reason to buy one.
>>
>>333734776
Nigger, who cares how pretty it looks, it saves the most space and it works just as well as the other models. I don't see anyone kicking and screaming about how the slim PS2 isn't a work of art.
>>
>>333732954

>>
If you can try and get a hackable one
>>
>>333734623
>It's quite
Fuuuuuck no it's not. I've had 2 of them. It's the loudest by far. 2 reasons why it's loud. The plastic is really thin, and there is only a tiny bit of plastic between the disc drive and what you can hear, meaning you can really hear the disc spin like crazy. 2 is the HDD is fucking trash, and again thin plastic means you can hear it running too, and they rarely install them properly so it will likely be rattling around.

The best one to get would be the slim. Fixing the problems of the original, without being a cheap piece of shit like the super slim.

Of course if you can get a launch model of the PS3, and make sure to fix it (mostly by applying new thermal paste), then it's the best, both with function, and design.

>>333732178
OP go with whats cheapest. If you go new, then Super Slim. If you go used, go Slim unless you can get a backwards compat one.

The PS3 will actually use a bit of space even if you physical only. However you wont likely fill the 500gb any day soon. A lot of PS3 games up till recently take 5-7gb forced install. Many other games require 1-3gb forced install. Thankfully most later titles either have none, or an optional one. So you should be good for a long ass time, assuming you buy a ton of games. Otherwise the system doesn't use much memory, since saves are small, and most GOTY edition of games have the DLC on disc (though some do require the DLC to be installed on the HDD via the disc).

Interested in any games?
Get
MGS Legacy Collection
Demons Souls
Those 2 for sure.
>>
>>333735456
I also forgot patches. Most games have patches that are just a couple hundred mbs, while some games do have 1-3gb patches. It's not terribly common though.

I was wondering what you meant by getting a launch model and "fixing" it. Because I wouldn't mind a backwards compatible PS3.
>>
>>333732178

1. Buy one at a pawn shop. They go for $125-$150 around here depending on # of controllers/HD size.

2. pawn shop PS3 may have accounts on it. You can use all the games. Do NOT delete the account nor try to use their CC info.

3. Enjoy.

WAIT

I read wrong.

PS4 goes for 125-150

Ps3's are $90

Basically getting the fat PS3, but the launch model with backwards compatibility (this was only roughly the first year it came out). It looks fucking sleek as hell, it's disc drive area is chrome, it had media inputs (SD cards / ect). There was a problem with nearly all launch PS3s, that being the YLOD is inevitable. It was basically caused by the fact that they fucked up applying thermal paste on nearly every piece of hardware, so eventually it causes the problem of the system not working. If you have a little know how (or watch a video) you can pop one up, apply some new paste, and you will basically be golden. You can also replace the HDD in any of the models, even put in a SSD if you wanted (it wont make a difference on loading times).

Backwards compat PS3 is simply the best way of playing PS2 games on an HD screen. It helps clean them up enough to look decent on modern TVs. Alternative would be either emulate on PC (which don't run perfectly, but you can make games look even better via higher resolutions). Or PS2 with Component cables (only a handful of games support 480p, however the component cables do help clean the image a little even in 480i games).
>>
>>333736561
PS2 games on a HD screen via PS3 look like ass. Either go SD or PC emulation.

Get one of the nwer ones with the manual sliding close/eject. They are newer, probably better built. The 500gb will last you a rediculously long time unless you buy/play and instal an un-godly amount of games/content. Free online still? It's also a Ps1/Blue-Ray & DVD player.
